I inherited an old 1971 Suzuki 360 twin from my old man and want to get it running for this winter for sentimental reasons and for fun.

I had no spark, so installed new points and condensors which seemed to fix the problem.

I had no fuel, so I totally disassembled the Tillotson HD carb and put a new diaphragm in it. I am not sure if it is right, but it does pump fuel now.

Both cylinders have over 130psi of compression

It will only run on one cylinder. It will not run over 1500 rpm, which seems like a fuel problem. If I pull the dead plug out to release the compression and start it, the motor will run up to 4500rpm and fouls the plug right up, like it has too much fuel.

The cylinder that is not firing has blue spark, but maybe its not firing under compression.

Short of buying another carb I am out of ideas.

Since I know some of you guys mess with two strokes, I thought maybe someone could give me some advice. Thanks

I'm not a 2-stroke genius, but does it have a "reed-valve" intake? If it does, the valve for the dead cylinder may be cracked, stuck, or whatever...

Prolly gummed up oil and gas sludge in there someplace.

Pull the fuel delivery system and clean it out good and learn how it works. :)

PS: Don't break anything doing it however. ;)

I'd look into a rebuild kit or gaskets for the fuel delivery system too.

Just my .02 from having a Lawn Boy. :D

snowmobile

put a turbo on it!

You most likely have a problem with the ignition, does it have one carb or two?

I would check points again, or perhaps you have a bad plug wire or coil, most of the two strokes had individual coil packs per cylinder,Yours has two single tower coils... if you need a coil or any other ignition parts give dennis Kirk a call...If it were an Arctic Cat I could help with parts since we are an auhorized Cat dealer for snowmobile and watercraft parts...

Dennis Kirk : 1-800-328-9280

PART # for EACH external ignition coil is: 20-381 they are about $33.00 each...

My reccomendation to you would be to rebuild the ENTIRE ignition system, check the mag and lighting coils with an Ohmeter and check for shorts to ground, etc.....REPLACE BOTH external ignition coils since they have a nasty habit of going bad on you when you're 100 miles out ;)  Not that you'd take a 35 year old sled out 100 miles:eek:

I bet its the coil on that cylinder or a bad condensor.... (we've had condensors come BAD RIGHT out of the box, and it reallly stinks because you have to pull the whole damn flywheel off to get to them

Hope this helps your ancient history!

Thanks for the responses so far

I have to get a timing light to verify the timing, but since I never moved the stator plate it should be close.

I think it is the carb flooding the motor out. It would only rev when I leaned the carb all the way out. The only thing I can think of is I didnt reassemble the fuel inlet needle and seat properly when I put it back together. Anyone know how to do this on a Tillotson carb?

I put my vote in for needing new reed vavles. If they are all gummed up it would do what you are describing. Good luck, it really is a fun sport, as much as I remember about it since I have been living in AZ for the last 12 years:D after growing up in MN.

No, I checked the reeds when I had the intake off and they were clean as can be, all opened and none were broken

AAAARRGG! Tillotsons! They make me want to puke at times. Are your plugs all wet when the thing won't run? Did you rebuild the whole carb, or just put the diaphram in the bottom?

I would probably try to rebuild the carb. You can buy rebuild kits through some mail order companies.

I rebuilt it already. The only thing I didnt do is install a different jet

What I need to know is the proper way to reset the inlet needle and seat

your problem should be in the carb if your timing is correcto. did you buy a rebuild kit? the kit i had gave me a new inlet needle. i am no tillotson expert, but have had one apart a few times. i know tillotsons use a return line to the tank, you might want to make sure that is free and clear. mikunis forever!

I had a three cylinder, two sroke Kawasaki motorcycle, and it had a dead cylinder, turned out to be bad seals on the crankshaft. I hope you fare better than i did.:(
