I got this piece in a wooden box from a neighbor lady. The box also had a some indian motorcycle parts, a stromberg carb, old carter carbs, and a horn button from a Willeys Overland or Whippet. I have no idea what this is for though. It provides some sort of gear reduction. You can easily turn the little shaft on the side, and the arm with the ball on it spins around, as well as the rectangular slotted part in the front. It appears the slotted drive part must be face up, as it has grease cups that open in the direction.

Anyone got any ideas?

thanks,
Nathyn

Yeah i kinda thought it might be a steering box. The only thing that makes me think otherwise is that there are 3 parts the will move (the slotted drive, the round shaft on the side, and the knuckled piece on the back). Do old steering boxes have grease cups?

Thanks for the info Suicide Six!... I already put the old cylinder heads and jugs up on ebay and got much more than i had ever hoped for. I'll email that guy and see if he can help out!

thanks

Not sure actually. She didn't know much about them, just that her father had an old scout, but you are right, if i knew what year it was, it may help figure out this part. Since there were old carter and stromberg carbs, i just wasn't sure if it was even an indian part.

Part identified

That, Sir, is the original prototype manual/hydraulic version of the Flux Capacitor for the Back to the Future car. Glad I could help! :)
