anyone put a metal garage together?

looking at getting a metal garage to work on my cars. i am thinking i need about a 30x40. any one put one together around this size and any suggestions on who to buy from?

If you're talking steel building, (red Z supports)do it. Mines 24x40 and after seeing how easy it is i'll do the next one myself. Roomy, strong (survived hurricane Ivan with only a few dents from several HUGE oak limbs and versatile for storage/modifications. Half or less in price than a stick built. You can do anything to the exterior to match the house if needed. Steel studded looked too close to carpentry type of work (I suck at) and did'nt allow for the space and doors I needed.

Shop around for the best price and be a little open as to the size. Sometimes you can get a good deal on a cancelled order that is a little different then what you want and save 30% or so.

I am in the market for a 30x90 or 40x70/80 myself... I sugget you go with a 14' tall building and get atleast one 12'x12' door.... for resale value - people could fit an RV in that way.

Don't forget to include insulation, door openings, doors, foundation, engineered designs (for your building permit), sky lights, vents, and painted sides (not just plain galvalume) in your final costs.


There are a million places to get these from - many seem to be from Texas.

I looked at many pre-built metal garages, and none would fit my needs, so I ended up going to the local metal supply place that sells everything you need to build a metal barn yourself, and they basically told me how to design it as far as how far apart the beams and etc needed to be and what size was required for what spans to meet city code.
Once I had that, I drew up some plans and figured out everything I needed and bought all the material to build a 28x50 metal building for less than $6k. Just have to be handy with a welder and it was fairly easy...took me about 3 mothns to do it with some help only on the weekends.

How well does the finish on these steel buildings hold up? I put up a steel 10'x12' shed about 25 years ago, and it looks like crap due to the rust. Anybody here with an older steel building to comment on the durability of the finish? Thanks

They do make aluminized panels that would hold up longer than the standard steel ones. Mine are standard steel and have a 10 year guarantee against rust. They are just painted, so no matter what, eventually the paint will deteriorate due to the outside elements. You must be very careful when installing the roof panels that all of the metal shavings from cutting are swept off, because if not, the metal shaving will rust aftrer the first damp night and quickly start eating thru the paint. I figure at some point I'll have to replace the roof panels, but that will be easy compared to build another garage.
