I was wondering if anyone here has turbo'd their daily driver truck? How do you like it. What kit did you buy? Any pictures?

We set one up on a 04 Denali a few years back,They work well.
and are not bad for install,Make sure you readjust the spare tire
as it may melt it from the tail pipe being close.

Don't get any funny ideas... You have a supercharger now..

I'm actually an STS installer here for sothern Arizona. They are easy to install and work quite well, as long as you dont do any towing with your truck. We have done several LT1 and LS6 Camaros, 2 Hummers H2s, and several 5.3 and 6.0 Chevy trucks. Priced out a Tacoma last week. The guys at STS are super nice too!

Why couldn't I turbo the truck and still tow the GN? It's a 2000 5.3 w/ tow package. Would it create too much heat? Would the trans fail?

Im an installer for sts and they work really well. Two of my customers do tow with thier trucks one is an "03 2500 hd with 8.1l and it also has the upgrade to 76gtq the other is an h2 with the 67 upgrade both of the trucks tow over 800lbs with no problem.

I have the STS kit on my 2006 crew cab and I love it. I am only pushing 5psi but man does it make a difference. I eventually want to put a meth kit in and boost controller and turn it up to 10psi with a good tune. As for the towing, it does say in the instruction manual not to tow but I do it any ways as well as a few others I know and neither of us had any problems *knocks on wood*. Everytime I drive it I get asked all kinds of questions: what you got in that thing? Is that thing supercharged? damn that thing is loud, what did you do to your exhaust? When I tell them it is a rear mount turbo setup they normally don't believe me. Then I tell them to look under the bed near the rear end and then they are just in state of  .

My kit consist of
Precision 60-1 turbo
Tial wastegate
44lbs injectors
Diablo sport tuner (programmer)
MSD fuel pump booster (not installed becasue the truck is already running fat)
Autometer boost gauge
AEM Uego wideband gauge.

In the second picture you can see a shinny object hanging down under the bed near the cab. That is the wastegate, maybe a little hard to see.

Not a turbo, but I put a whipple charger on my 97 Silverado. Still runs great with 137K on the truck and 85K on the whipple.

Nice!
So TwinyTwin,
Are you running an intercooler?
Did you notice better MPG?
Hows the trans holding up?
Is the exhaust drone annoying?
Does your truck have a clutch fan or electric fans?
Does it run hot?
Are you now running higher octane fuel with 5psi?
Do you have a posi?
Sorry for the 20q's. ;)

Any good kill stories with it? :D

No intercooler, thought about running one but with the way the front end is set up the intercooler would be hanging down below the bumper and then it wouldn't be stealth. So I am just going to run a meth kit to bring intake temps down and to turn up boost a little more. I checked out Razor's site and they do make a kit for my truck.

I did see a small improvement in the mpg's but not to much because my foot is in it most of the time

Trans is holding strong and on that note it is time to change the fluid in it.

The exhaust actually sounds awsome at idle and killer when you start getting into boost. It is actually like your running a open down pipe but minus the really bad drone at the higher rpm's. Get on youtube and do a search on STS Silverado, there should be a bunch of videos and you can hear what it sounds like.

I am not running any other external fans other than what came on the truck from chevy.

The coolant temps and trans temps all stay normal even in 95+ heat and towing the car.

I run the highest octane at the pump on all my turbo cars except the for the buick:biggrin: .

Truck does have a posi unit with a locker.

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

I did run a 2002 wrx back in December when the air was alot cooler. He was coming down the road from the opposite direction and happen to make a u-turn at the light as I was passing threw. We eventually caught up with each other at the next light. He didn't think anything of the truck while we were sitting at the light. So he just left the light at a normal speed. So we are now doing about 30mph and he notices a faint turbo spool coming from the truck. His buddy rolls down the window to listen and at that moment I bring boost up and let out real quick for them to hear the snap of the wastegate. As soon as they heard that they got all giddy. So now we are doing about 60 in a 65 zone and he is reving the living piss out of this wrx. So I bite and we take off. We are dead even with each other till about 80 and I just start pulling away from him. We probly shut it down around 100 because 105 I will hit fuel cut. I got a good car and half on him. By the second run his buddy is damn near hanging out the passenger side window with his camera phone taking video of me laying it down. We do this about 3 more times and everytime it was the same results. I know that if we did it from a dig he would have killed me. Fortunate for me we never came to a light :D . His wrx was mostly stock from what I could see other than the normal exhaust upgrade, front mount intercooler, and lowered suspension.

Does the diablo sport programmer have a custom tune from STS or is it a general tune for 93 that you added boost to?

Its like any other piggy back system. Take it to the dyno and use the programmer to +/- fuel trim levels and other tables.

What STS offers is, once you put the system on. You go through their little check list and save your factory program onto your sport tuner and then send it to sts over email and they will make a tune for you and send it back through email. All you have to do is load it. Once it is loaded to your ECU take if for a spin and check your tables. If its not right make note and send the tune back for a correction. This was a lengthy process so I just got the first base tune from STS and then just took it to the dyno to have it fine tuned.

I live less than a mile from their shop and my best friend is an installer/engineer there. There are different tunes and if you are gonna tow you should let them know so they can tune appropriately. A truck here locally has two tunes. One for when he is towing and one for when he is at the track or putting around town. I highly recommend STS my next "Turbo'd" buick will be a base regal with an LSx and a custom twin turbo STS setup. :P It is nice having friends at the shop. :D

Still not a fan of those setups. Someone needs to take a thermodynamics class.

Yeah they're slow! Fastest GTO with one is only running high 9s.

Everybody likes to blast the system, but it is a good setup for certain situations. A good example is the GTO. The 2 twin turbo systems will set you back about $10k, STS is around $6k. The twins have you drilling 3" holes all over the car to route the intercooler/piping. The install book is 75 pages and if you have a shop do it, you're looking at $2500 minimum for an install. The STS can be installed in your driveway with ramps and basic tools in a day, and you can have it back out in just a few hours. The big bonus is no cutting of anything on the car. Most are at full boost by 3000 rpm so I don't get the "you can't spool a turbo that is at the back of the car" bit.

Go to a Buick race and watch how long some of the guys take to spool up their turbo.

TwinyTwin,

You say your truck still has a 105mph fuel cut off? I would think the Diablo sport tuner would fix that.

I believe there is a fix for it but wont fix it till I get another tune with meth and more boost. I am happy with the way its running now.

I like mine! Check link in sig.

Thats a nice MPH! Too bad our Goats are heavy pigs and can't launch for squat. That's the downfall of a nice comfy cruiser with IRS. I still love my 06 M6 IBM/Blue. I think that is why you see a lot of GN guys with GTOs. They're about the size of a GN, they are comfy, lots of power, respond well to mods, and if you put a turbo on it, its the modern day GN!
