#2- How the he(( do you get the bottom bolt (i think 1/2") of the turbo cover bracket off ? It seems that some kind of heat shield for the headers is in the way.
Mine has been off for about 2 years with no effect on the hood insulator. I'm not sure which bolt you are speaking of, but from what I remember there are 2 in the front and 1 (or 2) in the back.
Where the turbo heat shield goes over the braket there is a (think 1/2") bolt. That came off easily. Then still around the heat shield there is another threaded bolt. Mine didn't have a bolt there. Where the heat shield bracket goes in the back towards the block that is where the problem is. There is a top bolt that I took off but there is a bolt on the very bottom that is blocked by a header heat shield. This bolt is connected to the block. Really doesn't look like much room.
i just swapped my turbo out a few days ago and if i remmber correctly the bolt you are asking about is a 1/2" bolt. i had to use a long screwdriver to bend the header heatshield and then the bolt could be accesed from the front. it looked impossible to get to from the side.
The bottom turbo bracket bolt it is a 13mm. Use a 13mm socket and a 6" extension from the front next to the lower radiator hose. This bolt also has the main ground strap attached to the back of it so make sure you put it back on when you put it back.
GNICETRY: are you going to run without the bracket and cover? Be aware that if you remove that bracket you are placing all the load from the turbo and associated weightbearing attachments onto the passenger side header. That bracket has more purpose than just holding the cover on. I'm sure there are many out there doing it, but I have seen cracked passenger side headers and think that this would just increase the chances of that happening. Just a thought.
Turbobuicks and Kevin-
Thanks. Looking from the top it looks impossible. I tried going in from the front but the heatshield was in the way. Guess I'll have to bend it. Also a good time to clean my ground strap since the bolt is covered with oil
Jay-
That was actually my plan, because I took the cover off and was like; This thing is heavy, don't need it. Then I was like wow this bracket must weigh some lbs too. I'm still going to take the bracket off to put in my new O2 sensor, but I guess I'll put it back on to hopefully avoid any problems. Thanks.
Ive been runnin no shield on a stock turbo w/ no problems for 10 yrs. So far have ran a 52 w/ lots of boost (heat) for this summer and no signs of discoloration or heat related problems on the hood liner so far.
I had a postens dp and ran without my shield for like a month. Two hood insulator buttons right by the turbo shriveled up from the heat. But many people run without heat shields and nothing happens. So my gues is that the exhaust leak by the elbow on the crappy DP caused it to melt.
Your problem is with that DP. I brought the POS Postons DP because of the price. Well worst mistake. That thing leaked crazy. Yeah some say use sealer to stop it.. WTF would i do that for. I got the THDP and fits like a glove. NO LEAKS. DOnt have to seal it like the POS DP Postons sold me.
God i remeber that pipe.. LOL.. I hated it.
Anyways i have a te44c with no heat sheld. No problem with my liner as well. I have had it off for 2 years now.
Had mine off for a coulpe of years now ,no problem.I remeber one night after a couple of hard passes I looked at my engine and seen the headers glowing red,but still no problem with the hood linner.
