Anybody got one?

Cost?

How do they attach - do they use the cigarette lighter?

Are they rigid, or do they bounce around a lot?

Can they handle the weight of a tach, shift light, holder, etc.?

Tach size limits?

Any long term damage to dash?

Other types of mounts?

Thanks for your feedback - my T wants a big 'ole Auto Meter.

I use it as do most of the AZ guys...you pull out the cigarette lighter...the mount attaches via the cig lighter hole...has a flange on the front and nut/washer on the back...the metal from the dash is sandwiched in between...I have an AutoMeter monster
tach(5") with shift light as do all the guys here...the mount handles the weight just fine...it vibrates a little when I first start the car and it's warming up...but the whole car shakes...after that it's fine...it's positioned well...can easily see the tach or shift lite without having to look down or turn your head...no cutting and everything can be returned to stock easily...if you need a socket to replace the cig lighter as I did for my power inverter I got one from Walmart...it has a 90 degree bracket which I attached to the bottom of the radio pod...located it as close as possible to the center console...you really can't see it unless you bend down and look...as for long term damage...not sure how it could damage anything...guys using it for years with no problems...

I have it and have nothing bad to say about it.
Holds the big tach in place with shift light.
Great piece!

i have but a bunch in that count for any thing?

install is a snap.. helps to have skinny hands and the ability to work on your back while laying in a car!

Thanks guys.

Great feedback!

Cost?

Tell me how it works with the ciggy lighter. I'm not sure I understand. Do you take the OEM socket out?

Thanks.

:)

This may be a dumb question - but does the lighter become unusable after install - I use mine to charge the laptop.

yes but but when i have installed one i normally use one you would get at walmart or checker and mount it like Scott said.

OK, I'll bite. I guess I'm going to throw water on your fire here, but unless you are talking about a Stage motor with a TH400 with a manual shift valve body ( like my car), or you converted to a stick, I don't get the tach and shift light. If you are talking Stage motor you are on the wrong board. I only use a shift light on the top of the dash on mine so that it is in the line of sight to the track.

If you have a 200 trans it shifts itself unless there is something wrong with it. I always just put mine in drive on my street car that goes 10's at 128mph. I try to keep the dash simple and uncluttered to have people wonder how a grocery getter goes so fast, not try to make it look like a race car! All I have is a boost gauge and a couple of switches for my alky. All I see from the picture you have is that it gets in the way of the heater controls and radio, or at least clutters it up. Keep it clean and spend your money on something that adds performance. My friend geno has gone 9.90's and has never had a tach.

How would you know if your trans is shifting at proper rpms without a tach, I bought one to clue me in on where I'm shifting at since this tranny is getting old and over reving.

I repeat. If your trans does not shift at the right rpm in drive it means there is something wrong with it. Shifting it manually because it won't work right is risking a big failure. If it is over reving you probably have bad clutches or second gear band. If you manually shift at say 5000 rpm from second to third and it shifts at 5800 if you leave it in drive, then it will still go to 5800 rpm!!! It doesn't help unless it is shifting to low and you are holding it in gear longer. But that still says you have a problem. If your trans is old and doesn't work right get it fixed before it blows up. Spend your money getting the trans right instead of the tach.

And you can't feel the trans slip on shifts, or hear the motor rev up??? I don't need a tach to know that. I've raced in the 11's and high 10's for several years and never had a problem figuring out when I need to freshen up my trans.

Also if you race at all you should have a good scan tool like directscan, or at least a Scanmaster. Directscan will tell you what rpm each shift is on playback. That costs about the same as the tach and shift light and will tell you a whole lot more. You do have to have a laptop to run it on tho.
