I'm ready to install the GN1's on the new shortblock but don't have any of the ARP thread sealant/lube. Anyone know of any commonly available replacement that will keep the same torque ratings? Or anyone in southern NH sell ARP on weekends?

what i have found out from a few engines i have put together with arp studs is that Black silicone RTV works the best for sealing the threads. The torque specs for the head studs are 70 FT lbs if u use a moly lube. if you u a dino oil ( 30 W non-detergent) the torque specs are 85 FT lbs.

HTH

I've got ARP bolts instead of studs(in case I need to pull the heads in the car) So the threads to be sealed are also the ones being torqued. You think that will work safe?

Any chance the ARP bolt would come with permatex #59214 ? I have a tube of this I don't know where it came from and I can't find the ARP stuff! Anyway, do you know what torque I would use with the #59235?

i love how people think that you can't pull the head with the motor in the car while using studs. they have allen heads in the studs so you can take them in and out for that application. and before that all you would need to do is cut a slot in the top of the studs with a hacksaw for a small flat blade screwdriver.

but i guess you do it your way when ya can't think outside the box

Ditto that, I dont see the problem with studs either? Very simple, they have allen heads. USE THE STUDS!

High white Temp teflon. Big tube. Ive used them all this is the best so far.

Thanks alot, I just pick up a tube of the #59325. It is the same as the #59214 but in a much bigger tube  So I'm off to continue the engine build. Thanks Again!

Back about 3 yrs ago, the ARP stud kit did NOT have the allen heads on them. This made the removal of the stud s dificult to the average guy trying to do his own gaskets. Back then we were forced to either use 2 nuts locked together or us a SBC rocker arm poly lock to pull the studs.

The stigma of not being able to do a head gasket job on a head studded block has remained due to these difficulties.

Thats good to know! I learn more every time I build something. The next time I'll probably go with studs, as for now the longblock is done and I can hear the turbo spooling already :D

the easy way to do that is to use a ziz wheel cutting tool and cut a slot in the top of the studs so u can use a flat blade screwdriver to get them out. or u can use a hacksaw but will take a little longer to cut the slot. But u do that before you ever install the studs.

it's a trick i learned from a GN builder way back when

Louie- this high temp teflon is even better than the black silicone rtv ? - have you used the black silicone before in comparison? Thanks.

I used black silicone once. Didnt like it. We have used the new stuff 3 times on our stage motors so far and the studs have not leaked.

If you do go with the ARP studs, there are different part #'s for stock or GN-1 heads.... And don't forget to run some GM seal tabs... :)

What are GM seal tabs?

I believe Jack mentioned using GM seal tabs with the cometic MLS gasket. They are tabs that go in the cooling system if I'm correct but are there any negative affects to the cooling system?
