Yep, knock alarms and knock gauges are crude methods of detection IMO.

With the speed at which the ecu logs sensors its easy for them to miss frames containing knock and not display it

its also likely your chip has a "false knock ignore" feature, since most of the modern chips do nowadays.

under what conditions did this happen?

Taking off at a stop. Then it stoped till about 3rd gear

My audible knock detector has gone off when I do a burn out, down shifting, initial alky supplied. If I roll up on her gently have no knock detection. Today I am going to record and watch for retarding.
