It's hard to tell how long it actually took, but it also looks like no one even opened the hood on it to try to put the fire out. All the fire extinguisher spray was all around the front like they shot up underneath it or something. Opening the hood fans the flames, but also allows you to get at the source. When I was in high school I worked the drive-thru at Wendy's and put a Mustang out that way. I used an oven mitt to get the hood open and used the fire extinguisher we kept next to the grill. Got quite a burst of flame when I opened it, but luckily it didn't ignite the grease-laden polyester apron I was wearing

I thought about it, but with all the rubber and paint burning it would've tasted awful. It was just an old 4-banger - I would've done the owner a favor by letting it burn. But, my freshly painted '67 LeMans was less than 20 feet away.....I did have a motive other than saving a Rustang.

Dude, cars go up quick. It looks like the track had no on-site fire protection at all. Even a pick-up with a couple of good size dry chem extinguishers and a few guys trained in how to use them may have saved the car and them the hassle of repairing the track. It takes time to for a local volunteer FD to drop wahtever they are doing, fight traffic to get to the firehouse, and travel to the scene. We bust our ass to get there but in the meantime a little advanced planning goes a long way.

FWIW this is a good example of why Summit sells a Halon system for like $500, one pull of the cord and this guys car coulda been saved. Also shows what can happen to any car super fast or stock.

500 bucks is cheap insurance and if you never need it thats cool but if you need it and dont have it like this guy its worth a whole lot more.

Firebottle.com I beleive is the site for the Halon system Summit sells.

My 2 cents.

I agree with Halon... and the best part about it is it doesnt damage ANYTHING.. theres no cleanup at all! It dissipates into the air.

Ive been a fireman for 5 years and yeah cars do go up that quick. IMO if he had a decent extinguisher and popped the hood he could have easily saved that car.

the funny thing is that his insurance company wont cover racing accidents:rolleyes: :(

My insurance did cover some of the expense. Not all monies spent but, more than blue book.

You should change insurance companies. Make sure it says nothing about restricted areas or racing events. ;)

Dude how did that happen????

A guy in our club in SC melted his GN like that. It's pretty easy to do. here's how:

You are going down the track and your fuel line breaks. The car is coasting and the key is still on so the pump is pumping. the exhaust starts the fuel vapor on on fire. By the time the car coasts to a stop smoke is pouring out of the hood and into the passenger compartment so you bail...forgeting to turn off the ignition.

Fuel pump keeps pumping (until the battery explodes), car melts to the ground.

well hell, why dont they have a saftey system like they do on boats and such. have alittle clip with about 1 foot or so of line running to a switch near your ignition with a plastic clip, when you jump out it will kill every thing.
