Ive got a no start condition with the stock engine I put in (while mine is out for rebuild). I remember this was the reason that my brother stopped driving the car that this engine was in some years back. It was the first TR we had experience with (first FI car for that matter). Now that I know quite a bit more about them, Im betting a injector(s) are stuck open, if thats possible. I want to see what you guys think.

Currently FP is not holding and I smell gas (shoots up like normal, then falls down quickly). Sounds like its trying to start. I remember symptoms back when the engine did run to be ocasional backfiring and black smoke with raw gas coming out of pipes  . It finally just stopped running.
Cam sensor, coil/mod, ECM, AFPR, FP gauge are known good from my motor that I just took out. The crank sensor is new. Only thing that I can think of that it could be would be injectors. What do you guys think? Can injectors be stuck open?

Oh yeah, I also remember doing compression tests on this motor before while it was still in this no start state, but in the other car. Compression was very even through all cylinders at 120.

Noise was pushrods (lifter preload). How it was thrown off I dont know, because it was all set when I put the heads on a couple of months ago. Im guessing the cam may have a worn lobe or two, or three, or four.......
I just went ahead and threw some slightly longer pushrods in to test my theory and all the topend noise went away. I was too late though. Damage developed to the bottom end and I finally found metal shavings in the oil.
I wouldnt be surprised if this was all initiated by the wiped cam that I had before, or maybe I left some crap in there when I did the heads etc at the begining of the year
Ive got the engine on a stand, but havent opened it up yet. I jumped on this other motor that I had sitting so that I could still drive the car and take my time on the engine I took out. Maybe I can get some tips from Leeo and you guys and go all out with it this time. Im anxious to see how the motor I just put in runs though. It was always a really strong running stock engine. It was the engine that originally got my brothers and I hooked on these cars in the first place.

Jector??

Most likely the injectors are full of rotted gas.. it turns to "snot" after yrs of sitting..
Likely the injectors tried to pulse, some may have gotten open and are being stuck in that position, are allowing fuel to run as long as there is psi on the rail.
Suggest you pull the plugs after you prime the system. If they are really wet, bad inj's are the cause.. Assuming the plugs are firing..:D :D

Thanks.
I havent checked the plugs since trying to fire it up last night, but I do recall the last time we tried to get this engine started way back when that the plugs were VERY wet. AND did I mention.... GAS COMING OUT OF THE TAIL PIPES WHEN THE CAR LAST RAN.
Engine always had spark, plus Im positive its getting good spark since Im using all my known good (new) parts from the engine that just came out.

Looks like I'll pull the injectors ;)

Just got it running after switching injectors. This engine sounds GOOD. Sounds like mine was supposed to sound like. All I hear from it is the injectors. No tapping or knocking. When I rev it all I hear is it sucking air.
Kind of cool bringing this engine from our first TR 6+ years ago back to life. My brother is going to kick himself when he hears it running (it was originally his). All this time it just needed injectors :D .

sweet.did you put all your "goodies" on it or is it all stock?

The engine to our best knowledge is stock (and looks to be so). After getting into it I sense a rebuild in the past, or at least a partial rebuild. I replaced the rear main seal while I had the chance and noticed the old one wasnt rope, it was neoprene like the one I was putting in. I also noticed the bit of head gasket that sticks out on the side of the heads wasnt steel. The crank looked real good and thanks goodness had the rolled fillets (turbo crank). The main bearing that I looked at (rear main) looked like it had alot of "meat" on it.
Overall though looks like a stock engine, from oil pan to turbo. Goodies? :D Well, I fitted my headers, 3"Dp, and exhaust of course. My air induction (k&n, etc.). '87 ecm, coil, mod. AFPR, and hotwired 340 (of course). 10mm wires. Nothing spectacular, just a few bolt ons. I guess it pretty much has the [original] hotair recipe items. Im going to try to tune the heck out of it. I wouldnt be surprised if it runs just aswell, or better, than the engine that came out (I think that engine had some issues). I still have the TA33, J.J. ported TB, 37# injectors, ported heads, V1 intake, and alky sitting on the side. It should be fun if I can actually see improvements as I add stuff. We'll see. This was supposed to just be a temporary engine, remember  ;) .
