Ballbearing smaller turbos, overkill?

So I have a 3200-3400 stall converter and it should handle a 6152 standard journal bearing just fine. Is there still a benefit to having it in a ball-bearing option, or will I just end up with too loose of a converter for my turbo and a waste of money? Is it still worth it for the sake of spool-up even though my converter could handle it in standard bearing form??

(Yes, for those of you keeping track of me, I've gone from asking questions about running a 6776 to a 6152, I change my mind a lot... )

i wouldnt waste my time on a 6152bb with that stall now if u wanted a bigger turbo i would go with a bb unit. you have enough stall to cover the 6152

I don't think you can get a 6152 in a BB version ?

I think you have to go with either a 6131BB or a 6176BB

FWIW, I ran a PT52 many years ago and thought is was a good turbo. It is the same turbine wheel as the 6152 with the old style 60-1 compressor wheel.

IMHO a 6152BB would a kick-ass turbo, I wish they'd make one !

i have the regular one now and its got decent power its a good turbo works well with my 3200 westcoast converter

Haha wow you're right. I've been looking at so many different turbos the last few days I've ended up confused. Can't get the 6152 with BB.

Okay, so let's change this discussion to not specifically about the 6152, but anything smaller than the 6776BB, is it worth to have the ballbearing option on a turbo any smaller than that? Just in general, if I have a converter loose enough to handle a certain turbo with standard journal bearings, would there still be an advantage to the BB option?

The smallest I would personally go would be PTE6176BB, if that is available.

Super quick spool up is awesome anyway you cut it, as long as you can keep the tires from spinning and don't mind spending some extra $$ on sooner street spool up of only a couple hundred rpm.

I purchased my Percision 6131BB from fullthrottle. I went this this BB turbo because it is the largest turbo you can go with with a stock converter which is what I have.

If I were going to swap converters, the only other choice for me would have been the Percision 6776BB.

But I have to tell you that the 6131BB is awsome at 17psi and running 93. I plan on adding alcohol soon and will probably run 22 psi. Check out my signature.

I personally think 3200-3400 is way overkill for a 61. Thing will spool like a diesel truck .

There are guys running a 3200 converter with a 70gtq DBB just fine.

Isn't the smallest thing you can get with a DBB center section a TE44?

Well I have enough converter for a 6776BB but that turbo can get you into the 10s and then you're in the HP range where you start thinking about things like caps/girdles etc. So I figured if I'm staying with the stock shortblock for now there's no reason to buy a $1200 6776 if I'm not going to use it to it's full potential because I don't want to blow the motor. So why have a larger turbo to spool-up if I'm not even going to take advantage of it.

That's why I started thinking about slightly smaller turbos and then started wondering if I would still benefit from a BB version even though I technically already have enough converter to handle them in standard bearing form.

Right now I'm thinking either 6176 with the ballbearing option or a standard bearing 6152.

Ill sell you my t63-e journal bearing turbo.... good for high 10's on alky. I ran 12.0 on straight pump at 14.5psi with it. My converter spools it just fine, your's will spool even faster.

I just bought my car July 3rd. One brought it to the track once and only did 1 pass because i had problems with my trans cable.

The guy that i bought the car from installed the turbo brand new on the car in June and the car just sat in his garage until i bought it.

I have been out weekend driving since then a total of maybe 10 times. To say this turbo has been used for 1000 miles is being generous. I have changed the oil in my car once a month since i bought the car, so it has seen about 4-5 oil changes. I dont change my oil by miles, i do it every month regardless of how many miles i drive (which isnt a whole lot... the car is a Saturday night cruiser.)

It has the E cover on it, 3"inlet/2" outlet... good for 690hp. Turbo is 950$ brand new.... PM me if you are interested and we can talk about a price. I have higher ambitions for my car and need a larger turbo :wink:
