Should we take back the '82 Cardinals World Championship because Hernandez and Andujar were Coked up half the time?
I think what is more important here is the moral issue or even better, the integrity of the players. I'm more worried about the integrity of the game and the players than some tainted records. Records are not what I like about the game. Of course I was caught up in the McGwire and Sosa HR chase, but that is because I am a Cardinals fan. I couldn't tell you when Bonds hit 73 but I know exactly where I was for McGwire's #70.
I am a baseball fan first and foremost, even ahead of these black Buicks. I enjoy the strategy and concept of every at-bat being a battle that could determine the game even if it's in the first inning. Home Runs are cool and all, but the best baseball and the best teams should not rely on long balls to determine the outcome. The team that led the league in HR's is statisticaly unlikely to win Championships. Forget the numbers, but it's in ESPN mag this month.
I know the long ball puts people in the seats, but there was no attendance problems in the '60s when pitching was the dominant aspect of the game. People will come to see the best do what they do best.
What baseball should be most concerned about is the integrity of the game and the players, not who gets into the Hall. Awards are not what baseball is about. Its about families and hot dogs and a perfectly groomed patch of grass. Baseball needs to immediately seperate itself from the path of other sports like NBA and NFL and set a higher standard. Something that we as fathers won't be hesitant to introduce to our children. Baseball should be the benchmark of integrity in sports.
Restore the integrity of the game and people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.
