Please let me know if it is inappropriate to ask this question in the Buick forum. I asked it in a different forum and came up with different answers so I figured I'd go where the experts hang out.

My 1 year old Nissan Maxima last night was acting strange. When I got home and parked it the fog lights and brake lights turned on when the car was turned off. The next morning the battery was dead. The guys at the Nissan dealership said a dead battery can make cars do funky things. The issue I have is they charged me for the battery but it sounded like it was an electrical issue not a battery issue. ANY THOUGHTS FROM THE EXPERTS?

Car is under factory warranty right? What are Nissan's rules for battery replacement? Most require a certain mileage per month to qualify for a warranty battery.

You have had it since new? What they are probably thinking is that you left the headlight on in a two year old car and made the battery go flat - not able to charge. There's no reason from your description that you should have been charged for that battery, but I don't know Nissan's policy.

Im not sure the of the policy either but evidently battery's arent covered. My issue is are the BS'ing me trying to tell me its the battery when its really the car.

I had a new Maxima and it did the same thing back in 1997. They charged me for the battery too and the car was only 15 months old. No problems after it was replaced though.

Does that car have an in dash SatNav? If it does, it's probably the same one Chrysler (NAVTEQ) uses and they have issues going to sleep after the car is shut off. It can kill a battery in 24 hours.

Call a random Nissan dealer (ask for the service manager) and ask them what the policy is regarding battery replacement on an 09' under warranty. We require 2000 miles a year which is about 170 miles a month, but we aren't you usual car company.

Bring back their batter and go get an interstate. Any Interstate dealer will replace it even if you think it smells weird.

Without seeing the car it's hard to diagnose. Other than I find it strange that they won't honor a dead or weak battery, I don't think they are trying to screw you. Who brought the car in? You or the wife?

I work at a Nissan dealer. The battery policy is if the car is under one year old Nissan will pay for a new battery. If the car is over one year and less then two years old Nissan will pay all the labor and for half of the battery. So you would have to pay for the other half. Should be about $45-$47 plus tax. This is all provided the car has less then 36,000 miles on it.
If your lights stayed on then I would check any aftermarket electrical items installed on the vehicle, such as alarms, aftermarket satellite radio, or some dealers install daytime running lights and those cause all kinds of issues.

That's pretty bad that they charge you for a battery. My AC Delco battery died on me this summer after having it for 34 months and I got a brand new one at no cost. I thought that was pretty good.
