I have a TE 44 right now, but am looking to upgrade to something bigger. I love the quick spool of the 44. Any thoughts on how big I can go in a dual BB to maintain similar spool?

Turbo size

With that convertor in ur sig, I cant see any reason why U cant run a (6776)67dual ball bearing that everyone seems to be bolting on. I know one of the members is running it with a stock cam and unported heads and he says it works great. Cmon try it everyone else is! ;)

Well I guess if everyone is doing it, it must be ok. Won't hurt my chances of getting into college, right? Actually, I was thinking more like a 65bb?

Im sure that will work...

but, if u decide later to do heads and a cam u will have an bona fide rocket ship.

Pardon my duh. What exactly is a 6152BB and how much of a step is it from a 44? Thanks.

They never used to offer the 6152 in dual ball bearing, but apparently now they are. Maxed out there is about 65 hp difference between a TE-44 and a 6152E.

If I had to pick a turbo that would spool similar to your TE-44 but make more power, that would definitely be a PT6131RE. If you get a turbo that has a larger turbine wheel than the T31 Stage 3 wheel used on the TE-44, (ala 6152RE) and it has a DBB chra, it will have slightly slower spool if you don't change the converter. The only differences between the 6131RE and the TE-44 are the larger compressor wheel on the 61 and it needs water coolant lines hooked to it. There is a 55 fwhp difference between a 6131RE and a TE-44 when they are both maxed out.

True about the converter. The TE 44 spools like mad on the street. Runs out of breath on the top end. I was thinking a BB would make up for the bigger compressor wheel of a 6XBB and give me the best of both worlds.

You could could do the 6152 non BB with that converter. Or go bigger with a BB. Lets see what Patrick says now?

If your converter will truely flash stall to 3400, then that is enough to really spool a PT6776RS very well. If it will only foot brake to 3400, and only flash stalls to 3000, then the 6131RE or 6152E would be the two choices. Converter behavior is the real kicker here.

If you want to make 30-40hp more at the same boost levels, and not change anything else except add the required water coolant lines and replacement oil feed line, then the 6131RE is the best choice for dbb with the same spool up. There's really only 10 hp that separates the 6131RE from the 6152E, but there is a difference in spool up.

Decisions decisions.

If you know for sure, you will want more power in the future and you know for certain that you will keep on bolting on more parts, just get the 6776RS and some 60# Mototrons and you're done. This turbo can make enough hp to break a stock motor. (785 fwhp)
If your goal is low 11's and maintaining spool up as it is, maybe a little quicker, then the 6131RE will get the job done. If your goal is high 10s without having to run super high boost levels, then the 6776RS is my best suggestion.

Thanks for the input. The 6776RS would certainly give me something to grow into. Guess you don't know how laggy it might be 'till it's sitting between the fenders. I will keep searching for other threads on the 67 to get a sense of what converters are working with this combination.

I have a old school PTE 63E with a 3400 stall Vigilante and it spools extrmemely fast. As fast as my GT3255 with a 10" 2800. Having a PTE FM and good exahaust helps the spool a lot too. My trans guy asked me how that car spooled so fast. He said my car spooled faster than his stock set up. I would think you could go with the 6776 BB and love it. But not needed if you do not plan on going into the motor IMO. The 6131 will get you to mid 11s easy and spool like mad on the street. I have been tempted to get rid of my GT3255 and go to a 6131 DBB. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Heres the guy with the unopened motor and the 6776.

bumped the boost up to 19 psi today. pulls pretty well to say the least. gonna wait for the fast system before i crank it up to the 25 ish range. can't get over how loud this thing is though, screamer is an understatement. the spool up is awesome too, like i said much quicker than my old 61mm. m/t drags and FAST system will be on next week, should be a good week.

Sounds like it works perfect to me.

Right now I'm leaning toward the 6131, but will have to do more reading. While the 67 is tempting, the car is mainly street driven and I want something that is reasonably responsive in traffic. The 44 does a great job of this, always seems to be boiling. I'm suprised no one has suggested a 65 yet?

To add to the mix..I just installed a CPT66BB on my car..I have a Vigilante 3400 converter..While I have some engine/head work done, it spools like CRAZY...Very nice on the street and even better on the track...ran it to an 11.59 on 2nd run ever....I think the 65 is basically a 61...

if you're going to do a built motor in the future go with the 67bb. the 3400 will spool the crap out of it. i have a 3200 l/u and spools pretty well. remember you can always turn the boost down if it's "too much" on the street but nothing a good set of tires can't fix. for what it's worth, i've had the stocker, GT3255e, GT6152e and now the pt6776DBB. i know how the 61 performs and it isn't near the same level as the 67. hell my 67bb spools faster than my 6152 did.
