I just looked into one today that offers All the extras , ie... remote lock, trunk, 2 way paging, turbo timer, dual shock ect.... that ALSO has an optional GPS tracking system the YOU can log onto their website and locate your own car, tells you where its located, direction its headed, speed ect.... Its quit pricey tho $400 option plus $100 a year and if you have to actually use it there a connection charge as well. It was a Clifford alarm.

Thats about what lowjack runs also but I would rather do my own tracking so once they take it south, Ill still have a chance to recover it. Actually I think lowjack is still more expensive. But you got options atleast....... $100 a year is not that much for peace of mind:D

Has anybody tried this? Poor Man's Pass Key System[/QUOTE said:
I made one up and installed it for my car. It does have a bit of an inconvenience factor involved though.

instead of a lowjack system, get a gps tracking device installed.less expensive and more features like real time tracking from any computer connected to the internet and vehicle starter kill at command...im putting an ONTRAKK system on mine BEFORE it goes to paint ,only costs me $275. i can track anytime and turn off the started too.unlock doors anywhere (simular to onstar)i will sell anyone thats a member here -one at cost plus shipping.no monthly fee if you dont use it.or $150 a yr(i think)if you want to track it everyday.this is a new digital system(all the old analog sytems are losing thier sattillite next year)so im still learing it.system retails for $399.

viper offers a gps system with a cellphone built in. can use both cell and gps at the same time to triangulate itself. Works with the viper alarm system too. I think its like 6 bucks a month. the price itself isnt bad either

Chose a directed alarm system Directed Electronics - Security & Remote Start | Home Theater | Satellite Radio | Car Audio & Video

the BEST in the industry.

Just to let you guys know most of these systems are identical.

Viper
Python
Clifford

I tell my customers one is not better than the other but for the exception for the G5 systems from clifford which is a totally different system.

Go with a SST 1 mile range 2-way system with the remote engine starter. This also has the turbo timer feature.

Some of the aftermarket ECU chips have anti-theft features built-in. Unless one does a "secret decoder ring" routine, the car won't start.

This is inconvenient, compared to a wireless key-fob activated system. And if the car doesn't start, I suppose a determined thief could still tow away the vehicle.

For more physical security there are also "wheel boot systems" -
Rhino Boot, Wheel Locks, Vehicle Immobilizer
Auto Security / Anti Theft and Parking Enforcement Products - Boots!

You'd need a cutting torch or gas-powered demolition saw to get thru one of those!

Guys... Call me paranoid.. I make the following suggestion:

(1) Viper alarm system
(2) 2 secretly located GPS tracking systems (one to find.. One to keep)
(3) Remote shutdown (only a cell call away).
(4) The secret handshake type chip for the ECU.
(5) The steering column clamp lock (like on ebay).

And if your really paranoid...

(6) A big steel loop mounted in your driveway's concrete pad to chain the car down at night :-).

However...

Here is a cheap GPS tracking solution (Around $200 for the unit and $150/yr service contract) if you don't need remote shutdown:

VehicleRECOVER™ Vehicle Recovery System

This one is a little more but allows phone or web based remote control of door-locks, windows, alarm, etc.
