who makes the best cold air kit? or is the best a home made one?(if so directions please) thanks jerrad

I would have to say the big mouth.
http://www.buickgn.com/bigmouth.htm

It's not the least expensive way to go, but the MAT temp drops of over 60 degrees was worth it. When sitting at a light in the summer, the MAT temps would go to 130+ degrees. I haven't seen it over 75 degrees yet.

Not needed with the alky kit.

Buy some sticky tires instead :)

At 80 MPH... tell me what the temp is ;) Not when its sitting still :D

Not sure I agree with you Razor. I see a good cold air kit, a good turbo, a good I/C and alky as anyone's best chance for the lowest possible charge air temperatures. Don't get me wrong - I love your alky kit. But I see it as one piece of the puzzle - albeit a major one.

Yup.. I have had various cold air kit that hang'd under the car. The only thing the car did was vacuum clean my streets, clog the filter faster, and pose no better performance.

With alcohol a little hot air will probably make the alcohol work better. Especially when it starts spraying. Once the car is moving down the track, all the hot air is being sucked from under the hood due to the air rushing over and under the car.

Straight pipe with open K&N is proven ;)

And cheap :D

With alky.. Do three passes with a clean open K&N on a nice straight MAF pipe... install the cold air kit.. do three passes. See if there was a difference.

I'll take bets :D

Strike.. I hear ya.. prove me wrong :D , Not at idle please ;)

Im with you on the ones hanging down suxking up dirt. It came with the car so I aint changing;)

The cold air kits work well for street duty, assuming you stop for lights and such.

And occasionally run into something other than rice at said lights.

I clean my filter twice or three times a year instead of once now.

0-60 from a stoplight they work. :)

Mark makes up some great kits too, bigmouth ones.

I have a Buick with plenty of ground clearance so it doesn't suck up too much dirt.

Hot lap those track passes and report back whether they work. :p

I would go w/ buickgn.com's one...and besides its cheaper than Kirban's one and his is just the stock type flimsy air ducting...

The only real accurate way is to take MAF readings. I have several low 300 grams/sec before the big mouth and 320+ readings after the install with no other changes. Is it something you could feel, definitely not, but it does flow more which can be proven easily with before/after scantool logs.

I'm seeing 350+ grams/sec on turbolink still with the stock turbo so the LT1 MAF is seeing alot of air.

I would agree it's not 100% necessary, but that was not the original question. :)

I JUST BOUGHT THAT ONE FROM MARK, IT LOOKS LIKE A REAL NICE SET UP AND ILL BE INSTALLING IT THIS WEEK.
JUST SEEMS IT HAS TO BE COOLER TAKING THE AIR FROM OUTSIDE INSTEAD OF UNDER THE HOOD.

Agreed. My stock turbo screams. Plus everyone that looks under my hood loves all of the chrome piping. I need to buy the turbo cover from you next.

Well look at most of the fast cars and they just have the air cleaner in the eng compartment !! Hey if it doesn't go "chrome it"

We also offer plain aluminum and powder coated aluminum pipe in addition to chrome.:D You can look good AND go fast too. Ask these two customers of mine. Scott Atkinson and Allan Gorneault.

Scott runs 10's and Allan is in the 9's.

This is one of those subjects that will always have differing opinions.
