From the whine in all drive/reverse gears, I suspect my convertor is going bad.
My car is fairly stock. Which of the supporting vendors is best to go to and for which convertor? Gonna need shipping to Europe, so good advice appreciated.

Could simlpy be pump whine/buzz.

Start the car up fully warmed, engine idlin in PARK, disconnect the TV cable and pull it to full lift lik emimicing WOT.

Does the trans make the same whiniing sound you describe with the TV cable pulled fully?
If so the pump is probably whats making the noise

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm still new to the car. where do I locate and disconnect the TV cable and pul it to mimic WOT? Is it under the car connection or from the engine bay
TIA

Welcome to the Turbo Buick World!!

I highly..repeat Highly encourage you to delve into the info on these cars.

gnttype.org is a good.....lil dated....but good site for info.

Ok ..TV cable..

On the drivers side of your throttle body (TB) there are 3 cables.
One is cruise
One is throttle cable
One is the Throttle Valve cable for the trans...TV cable. Its the one that goes down to the trans it has a half moon disk onteh side of teh cable by the TB.
Other 2....one goes thru firewall and other to the drivers side fender to the cruise control solenoid by the fuel charcoal canister.

On the TV cable carefully pop the u shaped plastic end off the TB linkage and start car leave in park at idle and pull the tv cable with your hand..carefully not to kink it or screw it up....it will come out a few inches and get a lil resistance then stop.
You are simply mimicing the TB going Wide open. This will cause the line PSI in the trans to shoot up and if you hear a noise then its the pump and most likely not the Convertor causing your problems.

Last timethe trans was serviced/pan down?

Thanks very much for the clear info. I've had the car about 8 months and learning fast, but had no reason to look at tranny until last night, so that area is stil new to me:redface:

I'll do as you suggest and post back later.

If it is the pump, is this a problem? Short term/long term?

The trans has very clear fluid, albeit a little low so i will top it up first. The trans shifts hard and firm and was rebuilt within the last few years, but thats all I know

2004r filters pick up off the to of the filter so fill the trans fluid to the middle of the back and forth bends on the trans to prevent cavitation.

For a direct stock replacement I'd just do a restalled D5 which will give you a little more stall than your current converter.

As far as shipping. I'd have to see what shipping charges would be to the UK.

I like the Orange Crush, 3000 stall. Very streetable & not super pricy.
Most vendors carry them.
