replacing the valve cover gaskets
witch type of valve cover gasket material is the best?

cork
perma dry
rubber

I prefer the cork...to get them to seal I spray both sides of the gasket with a hi-temp aluminum paint...pretty sure GM used to do this or soemthign simialr because I remember way back when I would get gaskets from GM they had a silver coating on boths sides of the gasket...and they sealed great...just assumed it was paint so I use that and never have had a drop of oil leak...just make sure you don't overtighten the bolts...

I've had good luck with perma dry's. I know cork works but the perma drys are reusable and I never have to scrape anything. Make sure everything is perfectly clean and perfectly dry. HTH james

i have cork now and they have leaked then
i retorque them
then they leak again
i think i am going with the perma.

"Valve cover gasket Felpro VS50156T $26.99 Oreillys (metal lined)"

I think this was the correct one... Cut and pasted from a "master list"...

I bought some Perma Dry's a while back an they look pretty tough.. I have the Turbo 6 VC's an I have heard they will leak always with cork. An I am on my 2nd set an they still leak. I need to change over to the Perma but it's such a hassle to change VC gaskets. Or maybe i'm just lazee!

thanks. i just put my valve covers back on with the cork gaskets. i know they are going to leak. they are going to have to leak a little while because i am trying to get the car to the track. i am going to get the perma drys next time though...............................................................Bob

No problem! My valve covers don't leak, but everything else does. :)

Kind of like the old saying: "if that stops leaking, something is wrong"...

i bought the really good felpro rubbers, and they noWHERE NEAR fit my covers... I mean it wasnt even close man... I took em back for some corks... well see how they last. so far (about a month now) no leaks.. so far.

I have used FelPro VS50156C (cork) for two years and no leaks. They taper a little too narrow at some of the corners for my taste. So, I lay in a wide, thick bead of SENSOR SAFE gasket maker (like Permatex Copper) to fill the gap between the gasket and the cover. I let it set up for at least a few hours before installing the covers.

Using a 1/4" ratchet, I snug the cover bolts in crossing pattern...just to where I get moderate resistance . Then, after taking car out and getting engine hot, let it cool and check for leaks.
