My son is considering moving up from a TE-60 to a big shaft turbo.
My question is, if the car is mostly to be used on the street at what point should it be considered wasteful. I guess I should say is the $$$ ill spent for street use. My thinking is he can only run so much boost on the street...

Everybody used to say to run a big shaft turbo, it lasts longer, but I've not seen a comparison to show that. There are a lot of small shaft turbo's that are just as big as the smaller big shaft turbos, te67 for example.

He'll need to either run race gas or alky to take advantage of a bigger turbo. If he runs the bigger turbo at 17psi, its going to spool slower than the 60 and not be any faster. Now if he's running race gas or alky and has the turbo set at 24-25 psi, its a whole new story.

Long time---no hear Mike. what's the convertor, and supporting combo? If he can support a TE45a, that would be a sweet street/strip turbo. Of course, he'll need to spike the fuel. Brian

Hey Brian,

How's your car comming?

(( stock lower, ported irons, TE-60, 65mm TB, 55's, V-2, 2800 TC ))

BLACK6PACK,

He's got a SMC duel nozzel set up, but has yet to install it.

My thinking has been, for his application the TE-60 still has a little left. I thought the $$$$ may be better spent on something else. His thinking, of course is just the opposite of mine. I think buy stepping up to a larger turbo, he will as Brian has pointed out, need a new converter to complement it.

I think overall, he's just got more $$$ to spend than me..;)

Turbonetics BB turbo! Fast spool. Get a P-trim in a small turbine housing if worried about spoolup time. Then you can always get a bigger A/R housing to match better converte, or youu may not even need a higher stall. That is the easiest way to get a turbo car to run faster, put a bigger unit on that thing.

Mike, car went in the shop yesterday. Got alot of stuff to install after parting out some stuff over the winter. Still think a TE45a w/more stall is the way to go for your son. Also move up to atleast 72's if your going to push new turbo. Good luck. Brian

I'd throw the alky kit on and have some fun for a while. My brother has a 60 on his car and with the alky he runs 12.5 @110 with a 2.1 60' with very little tuning, and runs it like this on the street. He's spanked a few hi-po race gas trailered camaros.

He's looking to step up to a 45 and 72s now, but if you buy brand new, you're looking at $1000 for the converter, $1000 for the turbo, $600+ for injectors and computer, and then other odds and ends.

What stall was the AC converter you had when you were running the 45 on your car Brian?

The non lock up was "rated" at 3,200, but the convertor stalled much higher than that ( 3,800 ). Brian
