what is the BIGGEST possible turbo for a hot air car, worth puting into the car? Speed is obviously the goal, so price need not apply. I do not ever plan on installing an intercooler in my car, and my mods keep growing, see my sig for current mods.

Thanks everyone!

John

You could make any TA style turbo fit. Just not a real 'bolt-on'.

You are pretty brave without an intercooler, but anyway i think any ta will fit.

Any TA for real? If I did try any TA, I would have to reclock the compressor housing, correct? And what is a pretty big TA anyway? I know the 61 is nice, is there anything else that would fit under the hood? Thanks a bunch everyone!

John

turbo6x2 has the equivalent of a 63 that john craig installed in a stock hotair housing.that's as big as you can get in a stock hotair housing.

as was said, you can install ta series turbos on hotair cars with minor effort.i've been running a ta-60 for years,i've got a fresh ta-61 sitting here waiting for my car to emerge from the tranny shop :( .if i'm not mistaken you can get up to a 66 in a standard ta series turbo housing.

when you say "in a stock hot air housing", you mean to say the compressor wheel is exchanged for a different size, and some port work is then done? If I buy a TA66 or lesser, is there any benifit over sending my unit out to John Craig or Turbonetics? As every one knows, size does matter, and if air is not flowing freely, let alone at high amounts, our 3400 lb cars arent going to move. So what is the best option? I like to keep the car for show eventually, and I know for a fact, my stock turbo is wiped out (lots-o-oil in compressor), so where do we go?

Thanks again!!!

John

well,a big turbo is just part of the overall combination.you're at the stage where you need to ask yourself what you want this car to do.if you go with a big turbo you'll need a looser stall convertor, bigger injectors/chip,etc.if you're not willing or able to make these other changes your car will run like crap with a big turbo.

the stock hotair housing is different(slightly smaller)than the 87/ta housing.the obvious benefit of having john craig build you a big turbo using the stock housing is that it will be a direct bolt-in.

the mods: In the next 9 months, I plan on purchasing: 2800-3000 stall converter, 42.5 lb injectors, nitto drags, and ported heads from arizonaGN, 3" cat-back system from atr, alky injection from smc, 87 coil, computer, tranlator, maf, mat, and turbolink. chips are definately not a problem (thanks Jim Testa!). Thats the big stuff for now. I see a roll cage in the future also, but that's only if they tell me. hehehehe. Thanks for the info!

lemme tell ya from experience...go with at least a 3200 lock-up convertor.that'll let ya run a 61/62 turbo...if you've got the nuts go with a 3400 and go to the 63...42's prolly won't cut the mustard at that point tho...

it seems that non-intercooled cars really appreciate big, efficient turbos...makes sense...flow more air at a given boost level with less heat.without an intercooler there to remove the heat you need all the help you can get.

if i was in your spot i'd go with 50's,a jc 63 in a hotair housing and 3400 stall...  :D .

when people say lock up converter...what the hell are they talking about? I never heard of one until I bought my buick, and I just bought a 2800 stall converter a few months back, but people kept asking me if it was a lock up...I couldnt tell them anything cuz I have no clue what it is!!! As for a JC turbo, I am not sure exactly what to go for. I am looking for that hight 11 sec slip, but what does it take to get there??

Thanks WFO, and everyone else too!!!

John

lockup convertors have a clutch in them that you can lock up(manually or ecm)to eliminate all slip from the convertor.they're tits for street cars.

if you're looking for high 11's(on race gas/timing)a ta-60 will get you there and will work with your 2800 stall convertor.

what kind of convertor do you have?

My convertor is a stock d5 sent to art carr for the 2800 restall. I got a recipt with it when i bought it off of ebay. Looks real!
Thanks for the help again!

ok...back with this issue. I had spoken to a few guys over the weekend, and I was informed that I must alter the intake adapter on my car to fit a TA turbo, because the adapter will not fit into the turbo like a stock hot air turbo would. Is this true? If so, is there any part I can buy, or do I have to fabricate sumthin myself? Thanks guys!

John

if you buy a turbo from john craig he can weld your adapter to your new turbo so it'll plug right in...
