I have a motor that we tore down a month or two ago for a friend that wants the parts. He hasnt been able to build it yet, and there's a little surface rust starting to form on the cylinder walls. Whats the best thing to do to prevent this until he can get it together? Hopefully that will be pretty soon btw. Anything special to do to the crank and such during this time? Any advice is welcome. TIA

Use a light coat of lithium grease or light grease. That should do the trick.

keep it oiled with motor oil, only thing is that it will not last long. If you are going to store it long, you should use a special spray on coating for preventing rust. Try industrial supply house mscdirect.com and do a search on rust inhibitors.

Crank

Is the crank out of the block?
I was told to never "lay" a crank down, that was not in the block.

Is it laying down flat?

I was told to stand it on end. Be very careful it's safe and doesn't get knocked over, then you are srcewed.

Some how make sure it can't get knocked over!!!
seating it down hard on the end is not a good thing either!

One guy had his crank standing on end and knocked it over.

After he stops crying he will take it to have it checked.
