Can I please get some tech info for my 1984 Buick T-type....It's been blowing smoke on heavy and medium acceleration. When I get on the pedal the car pings very loudly. On the freeway at 100 or so it does just fine. The turbo was just replaced. The car has 23,000 miles on it. From what I can tell it's pulling the oil from the pcv through the wastegate solenoid and into the intake. Why????

start at the beginning.tell us everything that has been done to the car.

we need to know if it doesn't have the stock air in the tires.EVERYTHING :).

blowing smoke during hard and medium acceration

Here goes. I got the Buick about 3 weeks ago. The guy hadn't ran the car for about 2 years so I asked him to get it road ready and I would buy it. He brought it to me and it ran pretty good, it felt like it might have a missfire, but it passed smog fine. The next day I tried to get on the car and it just bucked and jerked and ran like crap. I went to the local parts store and picked up a set of wires and the car ran great. The car had power no smoke I was happy.:) Then a couple of days later I had the car idling 'cause I was checking out some things in the engine compartment and then smoke started coming out of the exhaust, tons of it. I checked PCV, intake for leaks, and then I noticed that one of the exhaust manifolds had a crack in it (he had put some loud dual exhaust on the car which made it hard to hear at first). I attempted to rebuild the turbo and found that I had burned the hot side seal (shaped like a "c") so I turned in the turbo and got a rebuilt one. Since then it has not been the same. Smoking on hard acceration and such. Could I have reversed the lines on the wastegate!?!? I thing the guy who sold it to me had a full tank of premium gas, I used regular. What type of oil should I be usingl, I'm using 10w-40w Castrol GTX. I also replaced the oil line to the T-3 turbo with one supplied by the company A1 Turbo in Gardena, CA. The car has a serious lag in power, I can hear the turbo spool up but the car seems to not want to go anywhere. I hope that was enough info......

Hot Air 1984 Buick T-type messing with me......

first you have to use premium with these cars.you're looking at no power and blown headgaskets if you don't.

castrol works just fine, change it religiously(3 months/3000 miles).

sounds like you need to put a boost gauge on the car.there are a few things that have to be done to these cars before you can really get them running right.

boost gauge
walbro 340 fuel pump+hotwire kit
fresh plugs(ac cr43ts gapped @ .035)and wires
adjustable wastegate
adjustable fuel pressure regulator
scantool(scanmaster, turbo link, otc)a lot of times you can borrow one form someone in your area.

any idea if you have any of this stuff?

I'll use the good gas. I'll change the plugs. Can someone direct me to the wastegate adjustment procedures????? The regulator I can do. I have a mastertech scan tool also......I'll do all of the recomended things and go from there.....I really appreciate the inuput, I like the car more and more and am looking forward to keeping it a very long time.
Thank you

look at your wastegate arm where it clips onto the swing valve on the turbo.there will be a clevis looking thingy held onto the turbo by a clip.if the end of the rod is threaded and the clevis thingy is screwed on to the rod you have an adjustable wastegate.

can you read o2 millivolts with your scantool?is it portable so you can drive around and read them real-time?how about knock retard?

So basically I want to make the wastget adjustable so that it opens less and allows more air to flow through the hot side compressor wheel. Yes this scan tool will give me 02 volts and the detect knocks, it will say knock signal yes or no. My scantool will also show amount of retard that is being applied, so I'll try to see what's up.....I put some premium gas in yesterday and a octane booster and the car ran very well, now I just need to replace that exahaust manifold that is cracked.....Thanks again for the info Sean....

Sean - don't waste your time with octane booster, its crap.

Before you get to jiggy with the boost, put a real fuel pump in the car. The stocker is completely inadequate.

yup, that octane booster is a crock.go buy a couple gallons of xylene or toluene and mix that with your gas.

what are your o2 mv at wot?

is the clevis on the end of you wastegate arm threaded on?if it is it's adjustable.every hotair i've seen had one on it,even the bone stockers.

xylene?????

what would putting that in the gas help and how much would u put in one tank of gas:confused:

xylene is the "main other ingredient" in some race fuels! Someone with more knowledge than me can answer with better specifics, but the basics are: Xylene is basically paint thinner; you can run up to a 3 to 1 ratio of gasoline/xylene mix (1 gallon xylene to 3 gallons gasoline), and if you DO run xylene, you should add approximately 1 ounce of marvel mystery to the tank per every gallon of xylene because it lacks the normal lubrication properties of normal gasoline...
