Like the title says, which way to go? Any ideas on which will emerge as the "standard"?

HD DVD from what I've heard the adult film industry will be using this, thus pushing HD over the blueray.

Sadly I think Blu Ray is going to end up being the standard. Too many studios are abandoning HD DVD and I dont think even the porn industry will be able to save it.

I believe its because HD DVD has already been cracked.. Blu Ray hasn't 100%. I think that alone is driving studios to Blu Ray.

I don't believe Blue-ray is backwards compatable. It will probably win with the PS3.

It is backwards compatible mostly. There are some features that 1st gen BluRay players wont be able to use but for actual movie viewing, it is backwards compatible.

It should also probably be noted that as it stands now, the PS3 is the only futureproof Blu Ray player on the market.

Does not hurt that Sony sold like 1.2 milloion PS3's this past holiday season.

Thats true however I stick by my earlier statement that studios are abandoning HD DVD because its been cracked. HD DVD players are cheaper than Blu Ray and the extra bandwidth from Blu Ray discs is probably unneeded in this generation of players. The MPAA and studios just want to retain their grip over consumers being able to exercise Fair Use.

WB has signed with Blue ray, abandoning HD DVD, pretty much sealing the fate of HD DVD considering that was one of their biggest positives.

The current gen BR players probably arent upgradable to BR Plus or whatever theyre calling the next generation of BR technology. The PS3 is, the others arent. Im sure the dual format player is a victim of futureproofing as well.

Aren't there players that support both? Thats what I'm waiting on.

Wait a little bit longer, and you'll be able to pick up a HD DVD for well south of 100.00!!! You can already get a H2 for 125.00... Glad I didnt spend the money on one or the add on for my 360..If you have the room, buy both.. Cheaper by far than a dual format..

I just purchased a PS3, and the Blueray pic is awsome. The PS3 is also one of the best at upscaling standard DVD's also. I bought it only as a DVD player, and probably wont even play any games on it. AVS forums has a good thread about the PS3 as a BlueRay player.
