Hi all,

I'm picking up a used turo that doesn't have a bracket on the exhaust housing (see crude circle in the pic). It bolts to the 'j-hook' bracket to which the shield is attached. Is it absolutely necessary? After looking at various engine pics I noticed that about half the people have it, the other half don't. Seems to me that it's a lot of weight to put solely on the header, but I wonder you much it really does anyway.

If it is necessary where can I get one? I can take the one off my PT61 but then I'd stick someone else with the problem.

Thanks,
Jim

Not only does that connect the shield bracket, but also I believe the bracket-to-block.

I have also wondered if the stock header set up can withstand the weight of the turbocharger - but until I know for sure, it remains connected to that bracket and the block.

Yes - the bracket is also attached to the block. Seems important.

I'd look in the parts for sale section.

Post in the parts wanted section.

And check with Brian at G body parts for a used one.

Assuming the stock "star shaped" bracket will fit on the turbo you are buying.

The bracket you have circled is what is called the Dog ear bracket. The bracket it attaches to is known as the Question mark bracket. It is of up most importance to run both. Without them, your passengers side header will crack from the stress placed on it from the weight of the turbo, and the turbo not being supported. Especially during the many heat cycles that the thin to begin with factory headers go through. Also, the main battery ground wire bolts to the lower bolt hole on the question mark bracket. If all else fails, call PTE and talk to Pete, tell him you need a Dog Ear bracket for your turbo. Once he relays this to the turbo room, they will know exactly what you are wanting. Not sure of the price, but it shouldn't be too much. They might even include the two nuts and two bolts that come with new turbos. I do recommend soaking the bolts that bolt it to the turbine housing with some Penetrating oil to help prevent them from breaking off into the turbine housing.
Don't leave home without it.

Already snapped one off on my PT61. Can't seem to get the housing off to get the other bolts out and to extract the broken one. Any tricks to that?

Thanks,
Jim

Hose it down good with rust penetrating solution and let it sit over night. Then use a rubber mallet or small hammer and tap around the circumference to help break the carbon seal that has formed. Once the housing is off, I would either take it to a machine shop and have them remove the broken bolt, or send it into PTE to have it fixed.
Just a thought.

I was thinking of sending it to PTE to have it fixed, but it would cost a small fortune to ship. I will try soaking it in some PB Blaster for the week. I have an acetylene torch so I can heat it up if I have to. I need to get both housings off actually - both the old (to fix the bolt) and the new (to install the bracket). I haven't tried the 'new' one yet but I'd bet that one is 'stuck' too.

Thanks,
Jim

When you get the housing off i would have the broken bolt milled out in a bridgeport and retapped. Trying to drill it will make a mess. Any machine shop should be able to do this.

Actually someone made me an offer on it and wants me to ship it to a machine shop. Seems like the best course of action and I don't have to mess with it myself.

I searched for pics of wastegate actuators on big-ish Turbonetics turbos and it appears as if the HD actuator is bolted directly to the compressor housing. The actuator on the right (that I got with my 'new' turbo) in the pic below is different than what's bolted to my PT61 (pictured on the left). I didn't realize it until I looked at the pic again today. I am selling (or have sold, I think) my PT61 w/out the actuator so I'm hoping that that actuator will bolt right to the compressor. That just leaves the mounting bracket, which Turbonetics says they don't have. I have one off of a stock turbo laying around. I dunno if it will bolt up or not. If not I can use it as a template and make one myself.

Does anyone have a pic of this Question mark bracket?

I don't have a picture of the J-bracket - sorry. If no one posts one by the end of the day I'll put one up when I get home.

I have another stupid question.

The housing on my 'new' turbo is free. It rotates around the bearing housing freely and moves up and down a little. My stupid question is: does the turbine have to come out in order to get the housing off or will the turbine housing clear it? I've seen pics where it looks like it should clear it but when I look down inside the housing through the turbo blades I don't see how that's possible. I understand the importance of keeping it straight so I don't damage any turbine blades. I'm really asking in case I get my PT61 housing free. I don't need to remove the T70 housing - I just needed to rotate it to get at the bolts for the 'dogear' bracket.

Jim

The turbine housing goes on over the turbine wheel. It will clear, just use caution from dinging the blades with the housing.
Don't have a picture of the bracket sorry.

So the stock one does fit. My brother dropped one off today and it bolts right up so I'm in business. Jack Cotton hooked me up with an actuator so I'm golden.
