Brake Lights

On occasion the brake lights will not work then start working again…the third brake light always works even when main ones are out.

I checked and cleaned grounds and still occasionally lose the main brake lights.

For trouble shooting…i assume the third brake light and the main brake lights all get power from same 12v source? If that is correct what would cause the main ones to not work yet third one stay on?

Someone told me could be ignition switch but i would assume that would also make the third brake lights not work and it has never failed.

Any help would be appreciated where to start looking

There is a ground for them on the left fender well inside the trunk. It's the only one. Make sure it hasn't corroded or loosend.

You need to get to the right side of the steering column up top, undo the drivers side black lower panel, two screws and a 10mm nut down at the floor.
Remove the drivers A/C vent a couple of screws and a hose.
Look up and find the white wire on the top of the harmonica steering column connector as shown below.
That connector will have another plugged into it also at that spot, you can simulate your problem by wiggling that wire.
Solution is to cut both sides from the connector and splice them together by soldering or a butt crimp splice.

Here's the diagram that shows C104 harmonica connector and the wire that comes off the brake switch into the hazard assembly in the column and then back out to power the brake lights independently of the third brake light wire.

Thanks ill look at that over weekend…i just took cleaned and redid gound by connector in trunk…i do think its in the column…after i cleaned ground, the driver tail light was out, wiggle connectors in trunk nothing…turned engine on and off nothing….used the turn signals left and right (they worked)….after i used turn signal….driver taillight came on
