this is a car i just got.
it had been sitting for years.
107,000 miles. unmolested/stock.
the owner had got it running the day before i picked it up - he said the brakes did not work.(they had worked fine in the past)

car starts fine - but when running the brakes are accuated- like some one is standing on the brake pedal (the pedal accually goes to the floorboard on its own). the car will not move- the brakes are locked up.
no leaks- anywhere. superficially all looks ok. (except the brake fluid resivior looked too full).
i pulled the rear brakedrums(looked ok) and put the rear tires on (minus the drums)- the car then moved freely, and i was able to winch the car onto the trailer to get it home.
the front wheels were not binding.

any ideas.....

thanks

still malfunction...

i removed the valve seat/seal-poppet and spring. that relieved the pressure in the system. the brake pedal returned to it proper postion. i put a new valve assembly in ( the old one really looked ok but i replaced it anyway).
turned key on and immediatly the brake pedal went to the floorboard and is locked there.
so next i replaced the pressure switch (with a known good one that i had). i removed the old one and relieved the pressure in the system- the brake pedal returned to its non-applied position. installed the new pressure switch. buttoned it all up - turned the key on.... same thing. brake pedal jams down to the floorboard on its own.
the guy who i got the car from said the brakes were failing and that he had really stood on the pedal to get the car to stop.....
then the pedal just stayed locked down...

any ideas ????
any help appreaciated.

I'd replace with the A-1/Cardone reman. power master part# 52-9702. It's complete with the motor, cylinder, reservoir, switch & accumulator. Lifetime replacement warranty. When I replaced mine 4 years ago, I was able to keep my known-good switch and accumulator when I turned in the core. Seems there is quite a range of prices on this unit. Shop around as most parts jobbers have access to A-1/Cardone.
