Finnaly got started with BJJ last night and hand my second class tonight. I'm in pretty good shape from all the running and weight lifting that I do, but this still kicks my butt! It's great!!

Anyone else practice BJJ? how about other martial arts? I'm a black belt in Taekwondo as well thouh a quit to move onto BJJ.

I've been doing jiu jitsu and mma for the last 9 years. On and of again for the last 4 of that. I don't know who you train under but what really elevated my game in the last three years was Eddie Bravos books and DVD's best educational ju jitsu stuff out there. Just from an educational stand point the books are great multi directional view on moves with detailed explainations. Plus there isn't anything better then choking some one with your feet or putting them in the twister.

capoeira ?

Isnt that the same style as in the movie meet the fockers?

My dad was in brazil in the late 60's, thats all i hear about is their technique.

Where did you pick the class up at?

Quick6: capoeira.....are you saying that is what you do? Very fluid.

Turbojitsu: still learning the basics but I will check out the books! The lead instructor comes through the Muchado line and is a black belt. Are you under the same instructor you started with or have you moved around a bit?

I have been around the arts my whole life. My father held a black belt in Jui Jitsu, a Black belt in Shotokan and a brown belt in Judo. I also got into the Korean art of Kuk Sool with my oldest son.
I was hit by a dump truck in my work van and blew out 2 discs in my neck, resulting in a three level cervical fusion which has limited the rotation of my neck.
I would love to get back into the arts but am unsure of doing any sparing due to my surgery. Scary stuff if I were to get hit wrong. Love the workout though!!

I have been dying to get into it... I hold a brown in Shotokan and blue in Taekwondo. Been wanting to get into MMA and jits for a while but honestly every place wants $100 or more a month. Hopefully I will get back into it soon... There is a place local around here called Rapid Fitness and they have a pretty good MMA program and great equipment.

I have actually called them and know somebody that goes there...They are no joke that is for sure... Very hard and I think Neal who is the main guy doesn't let you stop. I also think TFTC is an affiliate of TeamRoc.

I was pretty deep into kickboxing for ten years. Took a year of shotokan karate in the army and quit, as it was not violent or realistic enough for me. Went back into kickboxing, and loved it. Got good, but like most hobbies, it made way for others like cars, shooting, and softball. Then I switched units, and my boss was pretty deep into it. Which is where I got enlightened to it for the first time.
After that, the army started teaching it to us, for hand to hand tactics. Then it became widespread.
Now most of my buddies take it, and I roll with them on occasion. No matter how good of shape you're in, it will wear your ass out GOOD. It is a GREAT workout, and I recommend it to ANYONE looking to get into shape, and/or lose weight.
Regardless of weight/strength, it is a great equalizer, and a great way to defend yourself. (a 1 on 1 deal anyway) I've seen many big dudes, get locked up by smaller, quicker, more skilled opponents.
I am looking into taking it formally, but I too, have limited time. I wish I had more free time though, as I would LOVE to take it seriously. It's VERY fun, and is a no excuse form of competition.

Whats their rates? Any idea who their BJJ's instructor's blackbelt is under?

Thats whats great about those books they walk you threw step by step. Eddies black belt came from Jean Jacque Machado good bjj family. I've done alot of cross training over the years a day here and a day there with other schools I also try to go to every open mat any local school has there usually $20 dollars that goes to some charity. I've done alot of seminar stuff latley but I've stayed loyal to my original instructor Master Bob Schirmer. Combat-Do

Training always takes a back seat to health and personal safety. Have you talked about it with your doctor/physical therapist?

Yeah, thanks to the popularity of MMA BJJ can pretty much charge whatever they want. Kinda suxs. School I'm at is charging $130 a monthy...and they are the cheap ones!!!!

But oh well. When I first started Taekwondo I knew that I was not going to stick with it. I just wanted to improve my flexability, balance, speed, and confidence then I knew that I wanted to work on my ground game. Once I'm decent with that I will add in some MMA and no-gi BJJ training. Gonna concentrate on gi for now so I can really get my technique down.

I have spoken with a doctor who has said that the fusion is stronger than the rest of my neck. The problem is that I have lost rotation to my left side by about 25% and have lost about 2" of vertical downward movement due to the surgery. I have lost my ability to touch my chin to my chest which helps block choke-holds. I have been cleared to spar but am very apprehensive about full contact nonetheless. I have a great fear of being wheelchair bound due to something stupid happening.

When I was shopping around for a school I took a class at one that had me roll against a female blue belt. I had at least 70 pounds on her and at first I just pinned her to the ground. Sure enough a few minutes later I found myself on my back with her fist slowly pushing into my throat!!!!! Talk about an eye opener!!!

Can't blame ya. Though if you have been cleared....I would probably take the chance as long as I was rolling against more experienced people that were aware of the issue. They would be able to control themselves better then say, someone like me that has a life time total of 6 classes under their belts!!
