brown transmission fluid - what to do?

Our machine only requires one line "interrupted" to get all the fluid exchanged. I have seen too many shops cut steel lines and put them back together with pieces of fuel line and not sure what machine they use, if they use a machine at all.

Don't worry Irv, everyone has their own way of doing things and if it works, more power to you. :biggrin:

Its all good Eric. Just messing with ya. Both of our ways have pros and cons. My machine just disconnects one line as well. I havent seen the filter come apart like you have so i never thought about it that way.

The first was a Chrysler van with a 604 that came in with both lines cut with what looked like hack saw marks and they put rubber fuel line over it with one hose clamp per end. It cooked the hose and ruptured. They almost flipped the van from the fluid all over while going down the highway. We fixed it and Jiffy Lube got the repair bill. They paid it since we documented it all with photos. They were MAD as hell.

Quite a few others like that and if I can remember correctly, we averaged at least 5 a month like that. Made good money off those places but what a way to ruin a customer's trust. I don't know if they fired those idiots or just got rid of the machines. The one we have at Toyota has at least 45 different fittings and not one we have not been able to do.

I pulled the trans pan today. Fluid was brown/discolored but there were no particles or dirt in the transmission pan. I pulled the filter and o-ring and replaced with a new wix filter that appeared exactly like the original. I cleaned everything thoroughly and reinstalled the pan. Refilled with new valvoline dextron fluid. I started it up after filling up with about 5 quarts - with the car running in park I slowly added till the dipstick read full. Went through the gears r back to 1. everything seems good. raining now so I will wait to take it for a drive till the rain passes.

Glad to hear there is no trash in the pan. Good idea, waiting for rain to pass. My GN in impossible to drive in the rain. Tire spin at light throttle and makes the turbo spool and turns into steer by throttle after that.

Drove the car yesterday about 10 miles - no problems!

Had the transmission flushed today. Installed dextron VI. Everything went smooth. Drove the car about 30 miles so far. Works great!

Thanks to all for the advice! Now if anyone has this question in the future I'll know exactly what to say.
