couldnt find my answer by searching. . . .

since i finally got my alky system running correctly i decided to crank the boost up. i turned the wastegate arm to about 17-18 psi (base setting)so that my BstC could get me to about 22-23ish. (i need to get dual solenoids)
well the BstC doesnt seem to control my boost anymore. the light for the BstC comes on under boost but im at 18psi wherever i put the knob. i dont want to set my wastegate to 22 cuz i dont think i can get the wastegate arm back on the puck arm ;)

im not sure where to look. all the wires seem to be hooked up correctly. maybe my boost solenoid is bad? is there a way to test it?
anyone else have this problem?

by the way this is the ramchargers boost controller for those who didnt know.
thanx

no one?

well i will try out my fathers boost solenoid and see if that fixes it

The only thing that comes to mind is one of the wires that's connected into the solenoid wires may not be making a good connection. Double and triple check them, and if you're not sure, re- do them.

One way to check is to turn the ignition key to ON, but don't start the car. With the BstC on, start pressing down slowly on the accelerator pedal. You may have to have someone do that for you, while you are under the hood listening to the wastegate solenoid.
Is should at some point start buzzing, and should change pitch(frequency) as the accelerator pedal is depressed.

If you don't here the noise, or it doesn't change, you've got a bad connection.

Another thing to look at is the wg actuator. Are you sure it is not getting wore out?.I also have a bstc and just had a similar problem to you (i couldn't get over 20 psi)--i ordered a heavy duty actuator from J. Craig and now i have more boost:cool:

Someone recently went thru the same kind of issues you are having and his turned out to be incorrect boost control hoses/"Y" fitting install. Go back to square 1, relax the actuator tension, turn off the BSTC, and verify that all is in good order with stock setup before you start.

what is the max boost with a normal wastegate?

this one is less than a few months old from, kirbans but it is not the heavy duty one.

Depends on where the rod is adjusted for your minimum boost setting.

Say you have the knob at minimum and you adjust the rod to get about 13#.

Figure on around 7# of boost range, from min to max. That's about all the air bleed a single solenoid can deliver.

im talking about the actuator.
are the normal ones (not heavy duty ones) ok to use up to 20+lbs?

I believe you can run up to 23 psi. or so with a single solenoid and stock adjustable actuator on tightly.

At high altitude perhaps not.

20 should be no problem whatsoever.

That's what I was talking about.
Yes you can push them over 20#, but you'll have to tighten the rod adjustment to do it, but once you do that, you're also increasing your minimum boost.
You can adjust the boost anywhere you want with the rod, but keep in mind, the max boost swing from min to max will be about 7#. This is a flow limitation of one solenoid.

With the rod adjusted out, you'll have a lower minimum boost (if needed for street gas) and you might only get about 18-20# max, but if you tighten the rod for higher max boost, your minimum boost will also increase.

Too much Boost

Dave I know this is not the hot air site but I have Problem maybe you can help me with. 85 hot air car. Engine was in pieces when I got the car. Rebuilt engine. All ring lands on compression rings were broken. I suspect too much boost. When I got the car running smoked real bad. Bad turbo. Bought rebuilt turbo. Drove car 20 miles. Smokes again. Seals out of turbo. Sent back to postons. Manual boost gage. Pegs 25 lb gage. Hoses hooked up acording to schematic on fan shroud. My main problem is I don't know what to expect as this is my first experience with turbo cars. Any help would be appreciated. Bernie Steffen zstef@mchsi.com
