Yes I thought about targeting the people with the Marlboro memorabilia and go from there. Here is a pic of the car (everytime I drive this car I want to listen to Def Lepard! ) and no I do not have to sell it I just would like a GN but I am not willing to just get the first thing that comes available. I wish the 84 T-Type was intercooled. It is super clean and low mileage.

No 4k could not touch the engine in the car. Just people using the economy to try to get something for nothing. I would go e-bay but most would not pay and you would have to re-auction. I don't know if anyone on here is looking for a good convertible but I will keep searching.

Looks like a red convertible to me. Is there some specific badging or plaque that sets it apart as the Marlboro car? Just curious...

if those cars at country classic cars in staunton, their going to be way overpriced. you'd be way better for your time and money to buy a known good car from a reputable member on this site or similiar

Same thing I was thinking.

Anytime you buy from a dealer, you'll end up paying more. Plus the dealer is clueless to what's been done to it, probably doesn't even know how to begin to work on it. lol

You're best bet as mentioned is to buy from a TR enthusiast who knows these cars inside and out, or at least knows about the car they're selling. You'll at least get an idea of who's owned it, who's drven it, and usually spend less buying it.

Now if you're still bent on getting either of these cars, my next suggestion is to make friends with someone who knows their way around a TR and invite them to "come look at" the car you have your eye on. Chances are they'll know what to look for and help you avoid buying a real lemon, or a stolen car with a vin swap. (yes it does happen)

As mentioned the 1986-87 intercooled GN's/T-types have a higher dollar value than the 1984-85 "hot air" GN's/T-types. HOWEVER don't let that scare you into thinking about not giving the 1984-85 models a chance. IMO the hot air cars are great alternatives to the more budget minded. Yes there's not as many parts for them but they can be made to run some good numbers at the track. (like an intercooled car)

As for your Camaro, I don't know what one is worth. You'd have to ask a 3rd gen Camaro guru on that. But I would think the tuned port injection engine you say "4k couldn't touch" would not quite sell for that much.

Have you tried putting your car on craigslist? it's free, doesn't cost you a cent.

What kind of HP can you make with a hot air car? It has really low mileage and is super clean and it runs perfect! It is black and looks just like a GN and has the same chrome rims. Actually side by side you would not be able to tell them apart except for the fender vents and wheel flares on the 87 GN.

The GN has 76K? and does not run good. I understand the GN is more valuable, but what I am looking for is a clean turbo driver for the weekend with the kids.I will never go to the track or street race just play on the weekend.

Well I don't know what kind of hp the hot air cars are capable of, but I have heard of them getting into the 11.20 range in the 1/4 mile.

If you really want one now I'd look into the hot air car. If you can wait I'd hold out for a nice intercooled car that's not being sold at a dealer.

As mentioned, either car I'm sure you could get cheaper by buying from a private party.

Do yourself a favor. Nothing against the dealer here, but without any history from the previous owner on the car, you are setting yourself up with a "possible" money pit.

I bought my GN about 2 years ago, when anything under $10K was pretty much junk.
The owner of my car only had the car about 6 months, was a mustang man and new very little about its history what so ever.
He sold it to get out of it and buy another Mustang.

Every thing I do and look into on the car is a new discovery, i.e. what kind of fuel pump is in it, how old are the injectors, what kind of chip is in it.
The list goes on and on.

Just figure on replacing stuff that is old, worn out, or not the right one to begin with, and in some case's since you just dont know how old it is, replace it anyway.
I wish I had known about this site before I bought mine.
Keep looking on this site for an original, TAKEN CARE of car.
They do show up here.
If as you say the car is not running right, you are taking a big chance on it being something simple, or maybe not ?

Their ad says "runs and drives great"
HUH, what does that tell you ?

Price wise, looking strictly from the pics, ASSUMING it is nothing major to get it running correctly the price is very reasonable and appears to be in line for the car from my perspective.
Again that is dependant on why it isnt running correctly.

Your cars value is down and so is this cars value just like housing, the stock market, etc etc.

Mileage is not nearly as important (we are not talking a below 10,000 mile show car), as maintenance and just plain old replacing worn out and old parts.

Maybe put out a message on this board for "Anyone near Staunton"
who would be willing to look at this car with me ?

Good luck
Steve

Well I bought my convertible from pictures and had it transported. There were some surprises but nothing major.

I like the fact of the 84 being stock and nothing replaced! I will go there and check them out to see what I think. I don't have to swap and that is a good thing.

definitely go with the 87. No matter how well the 84 runs, the 87 will be more valuable and more desirable to most car enthusiasts, and a modded hotair will nearly NEVER make the same power an intercooled gn would make. I say get the 87 and find somebody near you that knows what theyre doing to help you tune it. It may be something really simple. The stock chip does not like mods very much, so that may be the problem right there, the owner may have just never put an aftermarket chip in it. These cars are very picky about A/F ratios (just like any other engines) it probably just needs some TLC and some good tuning.
