here's the question of the day.i have a 85 riv that i can rob a good turbo off of,and im wanting to put it on my 99 silverado 5.3,i know psi is enough (a sts rear turbo kit made for my truck at 5 grand:eek: only recommends/produces 5-8 psi)but what about "volume"?im looking for alittle fun, dont care to race, can make/or find a passenger header to mount turbo(gonna mount up front),all my plumming, fuel, oil, etc.even gonna use a 2001 diesel silverado intercooler that i have.if i get my fuel pressure up and get truck setup properly, will this turbo be enough for 5-8 psi for this v8?i know a larger turbo is required for a v8 at higher boost levels, but at 5-8 psi?like i said, not looking to race, just would like to make my every day driver more fun.whats your opion?yes, i need a new project

I would not recommend putting that small of a turbo on a 5.3L V8. It would severely choke the motor down and create huge back pressure issues. Even if mounted in a rear mount setup. The reason for such low boost numbers for this application was due to the high compression ratio on this motor and non intercooled. I worked with STS to help develope optimum turbo sizing for this specific application. Results showed anything smaller than a 60mm P-trim turbo would spool up fast, but would have some back pressure issues and not make very good power at lower boost levels. Especially with the small .63 A/R Garrett 3-bolt turbine housing. Most 60mm and larger compressor wheels don't flow enough lbs per minute to really have a significant increase in power. This is why the 67mm P-trim turbo has been very popular with turbo 5.3L apps. I wouldn't recommend the small 84/85 turbo on this size motor even at 5-8psi.
Hope this helps.
