O.k., here's the deal. I took the car out Monday afternoon to drive over to Maryland, but on the way home it started. You know what it sounds like when kids stick a playing card in the back spokes of a bicycle and ride around. Well, that's what my car sounds like when the thing is at idle in Reverse or Drive. If I put the car down in D3 it lessens, but it doesn't go away. It's really loud though in D and Reverse. The car seems to be pushing against the brakes a little when in drive also, not tremendously, but it's noticeable. I thought the converter clutch might not be unlocking, so I unplugged the plug on the side of the tranny. Didn't help, now I need some advice as to what this could be. The tranny still shifts fine other than this noise. It only does it at idle, so when I stop at a light or whatever in gear. When I take off it goes away, but as soon as I come to a stop it's right back again. It literally sounds like there is some plastic bottle caught up in the bellhousing and the teeth of the flywheel are attacking it. WHAT THE HECK COULD THIS BE!??!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I'm really getting tired of tranny problems every year and I do more driving than racing with this car. I don't understand what the deal is. Anyway, I was thinking that something came loose in the converter and it's not the transmission, but who knows. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Busted fins in the converter. Don't run it! You may still have to do a freshen of the trans but I would get the converter out and have it cut open.

I know it's not under warranty! Thanks for the feedback guys, I think I know how I'm going to handle it this time. I'm tired of the 200r4's!

oh, it's an art carr 9", but i don't know which art carr. i bought the converter off of a friend who had just gotten it. it was brand new when i got it last year sometime.

Pump and pressure regulator. Put it in D3, with engine idling and wheels chocked, pull the TV cable end (to increase line pressure) with pliers, if the noise goes up, it's the regulator.

Hrmm

Could also be a cracked pump rotor or neck of converter to. Check the pump rotor real close, I mean real close.
A broken vein ring can also cause this.

thanks for the reply Bruce, althought i'm just seeing this. i did talk to my builder who thought it may be the converter since, according to him " if it were the tranny it would be making the noise all the time ". after changing the converter back to a modified stocker, i fill the tranny back up with fluid, lower the car on the lift, start it up, put it in gear, and the same (&(^$%&^&$$ noise. now he's saying it's the flywheel that could be cracked. the car is also sorta forcing itself against the brakes, whereas it never did that before. i don't think a cracked flywheel would do that. hopefully you reply with some input tonight as i'd like to find this problem and fix it over the weekend for a track visit monday. if i get a chance to get the tranny out today/this weekend i'll check the pump for the crack. thanks for the advice.

it was my supposed hardened stator that broke....

i pulled the trans today and looked that flywheel ( no cracks ), looked at the pump closely ( no cracks ). well, the builder wanted to just take a look inside. he goes to pull the pump out and the stator spins. well wadaya know! sooooooooo, after replacing my monte carlo ss stator... ...with a real hardened stator and replacing my thrust washer ( which was partially melted ) the beast is back...

i'm still going TH-400 a.s.a.p, don't let the enthusiasm fool you.

Hey Godfrey, where ya been?

Sorry to see the trans problems. Mine's been bugging me a bit as well. I've been having some 2-3 flare issues. Not all the time, but randomly it seems. Do you still talk to the guys at NRH?

Drop me a line........
