i almost forgot to ask, does anyone have a good opinion on the fronts at 17x?, and backspacing at (?)? So what the width should be, and backspacing with a 17" diam. out front? If the rears are going to be at 17x11" w/5-1/4" backspacing on 315x35R17's w/ notched frame? I think that the rears will be very deep looking if the picture in my head is right, and i don't want the front to look funny and out of place. Just a nice contrast and fuctionality. Also a front Tire size recommendation? i would like the front to be very low profile, and im also considering lowering the car slightly w/eibach spring.

Thanks

I didn't see this post before I responded to your rear tire questions. Here I do have 17" wheels up front. They are 17x 8's with 4" backspacing. I have 235/45-17's in front as well. These DO rub at full lock on the steering wheel, but I just live with it. They do fit great other than that. There are pics of the car on my website although they are VERY poor pics until I finish at least 10 coats of Zaino (AWESOME SHINE after 6 coats now, actually classified as AWESOME after the 2nd coat) and get the new camera out.
I do want to lower the car about an inch but don't have the money right now for it.

blacktyrant do you still have the stock front brakes or have you gone to the 12" rotor? Also how much did you notch the frame?

Derrick do you think it would be posible to put a 17' x 9" up front with a 235 or 245 tire? How much side wall bulge do you have with your combo?

Thanks

It would probably be possible to put a 17x9 up front, but probably just going to make clearance issues even worse. I have no sidewall bulge on front or rear tires. That's the major reason I went with the new setup vice the 275/50-15 BFG radials on the stock rims in the rear like I used to have. It was like riding on underinflated balloons!!! I could rock the car 3-4 inches sidfe to side by pushing on the rear due to the sidewall flex with those things. The tires I have now have very low sidewalls though. 35 series in back and 45 series in front. But handling is much better, traction is as good as I expected. But I have slicks for the track so I wanted road handling for the street.

I thought about putting 17x9's up front but decided against it just because I didn't feel I needed it. And the 17x8's were a little bit cheaper. I also heard of others having bad rubbing problems near full lock using 245's up front, so I went with the 235's thinking it may aleviate that some.

Oh, and also, it looks a little funny with the stock brakes up front due to the small size of the disc's. But someday hopefully I'll win the lottery and be able to buy some big 13" Baer brakes! :)

How wide is the wheel tire package? I'm guessing 8 1/4" if the tire does not bulge. Do you have extra space on the out side near the lip of the fender?

Thanks
Joe

well hot and cold i haven't done the wheel job yet, thats why im asking some question too, but i talked to the guy over at simmon's and this guy seems to be the real deal with his tire sizing on a gn, as he has done alot of custom jobs. I was gonna go with his wheels, but i started to have this thing for these torq thrust II. So i have a budy that go the 17x10 w/4.3/4" backspacing on the rears, per simmon's recommandations. i haven't talked to him about the front wheel spec's and can't remember what simmons said about it, but i'll probly call them on this too. if i remeber right the simmons on the ttype that won the one mile speed trap deal at over two hundred mph, had 13" rear simmons wheels, so i know if i want 11" there a way to make it work, and well if you can go over 200mph on an 13"
but keep the addvice commin, there are alway more then one angle to consider that one person can always miss, so together we are stronger

also i remember that simmons said there max wheel width for the gn as they tried some different things was 8.5" in front, but it's the back spacing that i can't remember, also they said do to the design of there wheels(the one's we've all seen on the ttypes fetured in high tech) that they could only take it that far, but left me with the impression that a different design, like suggested above, could go wider, but would need frame notching in the front
to clear a sharp turn of the wheel

Also i have stock breaks but will be going with those aerospace front and rear
and it has nothing to do with me thinking there better then the bear's, it just an issue of looks to me( i think they look better)

Just remember going to the bigger front brakes increases the width of the front wheel spacing and that will cause a need for a backspace change with the wheel. Thats why I did brakes first now I have to find a wheel I like that fits.

My setup goes like this:
-17x8 Boyd Coddinton wheels front and rear, factory backspacing
-275/45/17 Nitto Drags for the rear
-255/45/17 Nitto Extremes up front, a 1/8 spacer was needed for the center cap to fit over the center hub, there is very, very little rubbing on full turns
-Eibach Pro-kit, HAL 12 way shocks(front and rear), Hotchkis sway bars(front and rear)
-Baer 13" Track kit, drilled, slotted, zinc washed rotors and red calipers to match the centers on the wheels

Jacob

I'll have pics up very soon.
