Was cruising on the freeway Saturday...all of a sudden car starts to buck a little...backfires then dies...pull off to side...cranks but no start...get it towed home...check everything...fuses all look good...getting spark...injectors are pulsing...have fuel pressure so what's wrong??...turned the motor over and it tried to start...kicked a couple times but was backfiring a little...sounds like timing...pull the cam sensor cap and there's the problem...the screw holding the interruptor ring had backed out and the ring was just spinning loose under the cap...my question is why did the car die...I thought once the car was running the cam sensor was out of the picture...you can unplug the cam sensor and the car will keep running...explanations?

Maybe because it was still getting a cam signal, though not in the right spot anymore obviously...

It's not out of the picture as long as the signal still keeps coming in.

Exactly.

No Cam signal... car goes into Batch fire.
Incorrect Cam signal... baaad things happen.

Makes sense...I just saw some posts in the archives where it was stated that in no way can a cam sensor cause the car to die but I now know that's not true...

Hey, I posted the fix for this...it's a plug-in module, but here it is again:

Here is how it works and installs:

This will save the expense and hassle of a tow! Simple to install, and it WORKS!
Hope this helps,

Yeah that is an interesting gizmo that had me thinking. Since it can only be a random sync if no real cam signal reference is available I guess what we'd have to do with it is keep trying until we get that random sync to occur in the right spot eh?

Glad to see you found your bug.....better change that before Friday...i wanna see you run!!!

I had exactly the same problem Scott.....we had it narrowed down to the cam sensor but didn't think to pull the cap until we dragged **** out of bed to trailer us in........

you guys don't really go racing in this weather do you????

Now you got it! That's exactly what it does, puts an un-sync'ed signal out there, so it'd take a bit of patience, but the car will start..and will start within the first three or four seconds of cranking. Oddly, it actually helps start the engine sooner under certain circumstances. But it can be left in place all the time, so it's really a good thing to have on the engine.
