cam sensor setting

I think the timing if off in my 87 gn motor or cam sensor, car won't even idle anymore. tried coilpack, maf, etc. Replaced cam sensor cap and problem still occurs. I can't figure out how to loosen cam sensor in order to turn it to set in correct position again. i don't think the sensor has to come out of the block, right? I also don't have the led cam sensor setting tool, but I was told that I could do it with voltage tester by listening to the beep, anyone know correct procedure and how to loosen so it will turn, thanks
