If the cam sensor is not set right would that make the pos cable get hot and the starter not turn the motor right

If it is off and causing the wrong plugs to fire, I can see the engine having cranking issues.

Easiest test is to unplug the cam sensor connector and see what happens. Engine won't start, but you'll be able to tell if it affected cranking.
