You can go down to almost nothing. Just don't preload it.

Do you think the timing cover will expand when the engine gets hot?

Interesting question. Any ideas on if the front cover increases or decreases the cam thrust clearance when the engine gets hot? I set mine up at .004. I used to run .010. I hope it increases the clearance a little when hot.
