So my car overheated earlier this week. After pulling the tstat which appears to operate OK (passed the boiling water test) I am at a loss as to what is causing the probelm. Radiator has no leaks, fluid level looked fine about a month ago when I last checked it. Wondering if the fan relay may be bad becasue the fans are not running with the car off and still hot like they are supposed to. Does the TT 5.7 chip not make the fans runs like the factory one with the car off? At idle and in park the fans are on.

My radiator is kinda beat looking anyway so I figured I'd order a new Alradco aluminum unit with new hoses and cap just to be on the safe side.

Did it overheat while at higher speeds or around town in traffic? Does the fan run when the car is hot? Is this something that started recently or has it been running hot for a while? Original radiator?

The temps have been fluctuating between 180-200* the last month or so. It overheated in traffic but was running at 200 on the highway just prior, only about 85* out that day. Yes it is the original radiator that looks like it had some repair work done. I've owned the car 7 years and never had an issue until now.

You didn't mention the water pump, also check for a head gasket. You can usually smell the antifreeze if the gasket has gone. Also have you messed with the cooling system lately, could be an air bubble if so

You're probably on the right path with replacing the radiator. It's probably 50% or more clogged if it's original. I don't think the fan running after the car is off is going to do much for you. I'd just make sure the fan is pulling a good amount of air when it's on.

Not smelling any coolant or seeing any leaks so Im hopeful the head gasket is fine. Never seen any KR on the Scanmaster. Water pump not making any noise or leaking. New stat, radiator and lower hose are on the way.

New radiator will help a lot. Mine ran warm too until I replaced it. I bought mine from Peter at Alradco.

The relay that you are talking about to get the fans to run when the car is off is called the fan delay relay and it is like $75 and not worth a penny. Mine hasn't ever worked and it never will. I just make sure it is somewhat cool before I shut the car off.

After the radiator is replaced you should look into the dual fans from alradco as well. I put dual fans on my car this spring and it made a huge difference. I can run my AC on a 90+* day and the temps stay around 180 or lower. It's all about the airflow across the radiator.

When mine was running hot it turned out the temperature fan switch was bad. Fans were not staying on when they should. I believe it is located behind the fuel pressure regulator on the top of the manifold. It has a single green wire going to it. Here is a pic of it after you remove the plastic connector. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_engine-coolant-temperature-switch-bwd_5970709-p?searchTerm=temperature switch
Overtemp coolant sensor and the single wire is green/yellow stripe. It turns the hi fan on 220 degrees right when you radiator cap pops off and goes through the hood .

I just noticed you have a front mount. Do you have dual fans? My Spal fans work real well.

It's always the stupid stuff.....loose connection at the fan relay!! Ran it all night no temps over 175*.

gotta love the simple fixes...

but i was going to say that the TT chip in my car turns the fan on somewhere between 170 and 175, and the fan shuts off when i turn the key off- which is the only way that makes sense to me...

A warning for you if your fan delay relay does work, when it does fail your battery will be dead next time you try to start the car. Not worth the time or money to ever replace that battery killing SOB!

It wasnt the delay relay that turns the fans on after the car is off, it was the one right next to it which I beleive is the low speed one.

Either way do trust the delay relay. It is a p.o.s.

I had my hot wire fuel pump relay do that and stupid me bought another battery thinking it was dead.
