I have a wierrd suspension related issue...

My 85 GN has all new suspension components up front and rear. I have replaced the rear with a posi unit out of a Cutlass or Monte or Buick - not sure. I have also removed the anti-roll bar in the rear with plans to re-install it. I have also installed boxed control arms in the rear.

When I drive down the road the car drives pretty straight. Upon even the slightest acceleration the car twists or rotates to the right. So much so that I have to compensate by steering to the left!

When I lift the throttle the car then deviates back to the right! I'm talking even the slightest acceleration here.

Again I have to compensate by steering inputs to the left or right when I am on the gas or off.

What the heck is causing this???

something aint right. lots of cars were built without a rear sway bar, and i've never heard of this before.
maybe the rear end isn't square with the body- is one arm longer than the other?

Ck That The Air Pressure Is The Same In Both
Rear Tires.
Also I Had A Car That Did What You Are Talking About.
One Of The Front Tires Had Broken Belting In The Side Wall.

Rear sway bar

Okay lads...thx for the help.

The boxed control arms I installed dont have holes drilled for the sway bar so I have to get that done. Plan A is to get that sucker installed and see what happens.

Figure i'll prob take it for an alignment too since that hasnt been done after the complete suspension rebuild.

The air pressure and squareness of the rear end seem good.

Ill get back to you all and let you know what happens!

Its called Torque my good man....Torque:biggrin:

This problem is not sway bar related!!!

You have an issue with either tie rods ends or ball joints loose in the knuckle.

Be sure the upper control arm cross shafts are tight against the shims. Find and fix it before you break something and/or crash.

I had the same problem and the rear lower control arm bolts were loose.Anytime you hit the gas the slightest bit the car would want to turn alittle and you would have to correct it with the steering.Tightened it up and it has been straight as an arrow since.

twisting

Yeah these cars torque heavy to the right side I had the same problem I would build up boost and leave "ft" and twist to the right what I did was installed to air bags and when I get ready to make a pass I would put 15lbs in the right side and 5lbs in the left and also you will notice if you spin your tires with it twisting your right side marks are darker than the left:cool:

Thx!

Thanks Turbodave231 + Challengermike...

I did replace all of that stuff...it may have come loose!

I figure all of this work is best left to a suspension shop. I remember having some issues with the shims - like having to remove some so its definitely got to have an entire front end check.

I can do lots but this is something well outta my experience not to mention I dont have the equipment to do it!
