carfax/help please?

Im looking at purchasing a car, supposedly its an 87 t-type, it was stolen and gutted 5 years ago....the owner identified it as his car and the state issued him a new title and vin. They put a vin plate on his door with this vin on it: 1G4AJ47AXBH247162. Comes up as 81 regal, the owner claims the state screwed up and punched in the wrong year. The car doesnt have the orig. trunklid so i cant confirm by RPO. How else can i tell if its a real T-Type and not a clone? I called the states DMV and they confirmed by the VIN that the car is not stolen but that's all they would tell me. Any advice? im not sure what to do here.
