I read a post the other day (cant find it now) about a member here that got hosed by Carfax when a shop that worked on his car reported his car as having 100k more than it actually had.

If you're reading this and are still trying to resolve this issue, i might be able help.

It happened to me for one, but that was way back in the 90's.

Sorry, cant help you with Auto Check. My advise to everyone here is to not let repair shops use your VIN. Its required by law in many states when a repair shop writes up the vehicle. However, i'm pretty sure you could request the number be changed at the very least. Any number or letter changed or even the replacement of a ZERO with the letter O should do the trick.

Information about the vehicle is being transmitted to CarFax via the shop and shops customer management system without the customer's knowledge or consent. Sometimes the shop doesn't even know they've signed up for the service. This happened to the shop i work at. We only found out after screwing up someones mileage and causing them a problem when they went to sell the vehicle. We since have stopped the service, and as an additional measure, i change the VIN# on the paperwork for all my personal vehicles as extra insurance.

Thanks for the info. I know the local muffler shop that I go to doesn't need the VIN but the dealer needs it just to look up parts. My odometer isn't accurate anyway on the Buick, but I recently bought a 1982 280ZX and there is a problem in AutoCheck. If I order a Carfax do you think the problem would be there too? It costs about $40 for Carfax. Thanks.

I don't know if they share info or not. Can't see why they would, but who knows where our info goes these days. Personally i tell them all to get bent. They're using my info for free to run a business. WE should get use of their site for free at the very least. But even then i'm not about participating.

When I was in the car business I can't tell you have many perfectly fine cars were screwed up by that joke of a business.

I will give them credit for one thing... The created a problem and then solved it.... FOR A FEE, of course.

There's not too many jobs in the world where $6/hr monkeys can screw up Range Rovers they've never seen before.
