Check Engine Light 'Flash' when Ignition turned on

If memory serves me correctly, the light is supposed to flash when turning the ignition on. Repeating flashing means no chip.

Mine isn't flashing any longer - don't remember what that means. Any help?

Yes, the blink off. At key-on, engine-off, the CEL/SES light should turn on briefly, blink off, then turn on solid. Can repeat the test after a minimum of 10 seconds of key-off.

This is a check that the ECM is running from the PROM.

If the light just turns on solid, then the ECM is bad. A bad PROM can cause this, but not nearly as often as a bad ECM.

If the light doesn't turn on at all, then either the bulb is burned out, the dash connection is bad, the ECM is bad, or the ECM isn't getting power (check fusible link at battery).

If the CEL/SES light flashes rapidly then the PROM is bad. Again, the ECM may be bad, but most likely it is the PROM.

another source of the blinky CE light is weak contacts in the PROM socket.

But no light at all could be dead battery, blown fuses, bad bulb, bad ecm, and all the other stuff previously mentioned.

What was the last thing you did before this symptom?

Smell any smoke?
