How do you get the long chrome dash strip off the dash? I actulay own a company that does plastic re-chrome for interiors of old muscle cars (not our main business but part of it) so I want to rechrome it becuase its completely chipped.

kirban 2 cents worth

a question I know the answer to!

its a press fit what you see is the center portion has a lip at top and bottom that is not chromed/plastic

use a very small flat bladed screw driver at the far rite end if need be push it to the left so there is a small gap so you can get behind it and "pop" it out of the track that it sits in. it i snot glued in at all simply
a press fit...in some cases its already drooping out of the track...

good luck

Dennis, I've never known you to NOT know an answer to a question. You are an expert to answering questions about these cars. Why do you think I hold you in such high esteem? Plus, you're like me, love old time music, as I'm a retired rock and roll musician. So, pat yourself on the back...you're a walking TurboBuick encyclopedia!:D

When you pull it out, pull it more towards the passenger door, and less towards the back seat. Keep it as straight as you can. Otherwise it will crack the finish on it. You want to flex it as little as possible.

Actually the best way to do this as not to take away any more of the dash retention on the strip. By poping it out it takes away the groove in the dash that holds that piece in place. The best way is to remove the surround pad. You have a little extra strip material behind it. Simply pull towards the driver side & it come right out. It also will not crease the strip. No tools required except removing the pad.

I'm sure we all have seen them where they bow out of the dash & will not stay back into the dash.

Mine does that...why couldn't I use a little dab of 3mm weatherstrip adhesive on it and push it back in...hold it it for a few seconds, should work, right?

If that works out for you & you would be interested in doing a bunch at 1 time let me know.

Bruce that 3m weather strip adhesive will work. Might be tough to remove.

Brian, good suggestion there..."tough to remove." With that in mind I went out and re thought the idea...came up with another...I cut a piece of 3mm emblem tape the height of the chrome strip and about 1/2" long and placed that in the groove...then pushed the chrome piece onto it...:eek:it holds it in just great. Glad you kept me from using the weatherstrip adhesive, so thank you. This 3mm emblem tape is good for a lot of "noseeum" repairs. This tape is available at WalMart for the lowest price around in the automotive and/or electrical section.

I have a new chrome dash strip to put in. Do you just center it and push it in?
Do you remove the dash pad and slide it in? Seems like it could bend, crinkle, or break pretty easily.

I removed the gauge surround (the pod the gauges sit in) and the trim just slides out towards the drivers side. There's an inch or so of trim behind the surround. Easy peasy.
