when i go from D to R i get a small clank
when i go from R to D i get a clank that's louder....

it's not the u-joints
mounts ae tight...

also when stalling the car up i get some clanking a little...

broken flywheel?
busted converter?

Unless something is hitting under the car when the driveline is engaged, it's the u-joints. You might not think it is, but it is.

I didn't think mine were bad either, but after I changed them out the "clanging" went away.

hmm....well.....that would account for the clank...

but what about the ticking while trying to stall the converter...

im hoping for everything except bad bearings, which im starting to lean too....my car started dumping gas into the cylinders and thinned out my oil

How's your oil pressure? Can you isolate the ticking? May just be an exhaust leak....those sound like a "ticking".

the clank when you go from gear to gear could be play in the rear end- the 8.5 is a strong rear end, but certain kinds of abuse will kill ANY rear end you put under ANY car. this noise is common on cars that are driven by people who don't come to a complete stop when backing up before putting it in "D", and on cars that get abused a lot- you know, putting it in "N", revving the engine, and dropping it down to "1". or going from "R" to "1".
the engine noise could also be a symptom of the same abuse that is killing the rear end.

Clank or Clang?

Mine has more of a clang than a clank.;) It's been doing it for years.......and years. I bought some new u-joints and will try that first. Mine are original and don't seem to be loose. I've been looking for the clang for a long time but never got overly concerned because I don't get a vibration and it's been doing it forever. I will be putting in a new converter soon so I'll get a good look at the flexplate. I'll change the u-joints when it's going back together. Then I'll look in the rear end (again) and maybe check the backlash on the gears. If I cant find it, I'll assume there's a midget in my trunk with a crappy bell. BTW, no neutral drops here....ever.
