Clunking noise from converter?

At idle or when I let off the gas I get a deep dull clunking sound. It goes away when the motor is cruising or accelerating and it not RPM related.


My first thought was downpipe or something hitting the frame. I put the car on jack-stands and got under it while it was at idle and it's coming from the converter area of the car most definitely.

I checked and it wasn't loose converter bolts, and tranny fluid is fine.

I'm thinking cracked flexplate (didn't see any cracks but it's hard to tell)

or converter.

I have a ck performance lockup converter w/3200 stall. Does a converter make this sort of sound when it goes bad? I have had trouble recently with lockup so I'm leaning that way. What do you think?

A crack on the Flexplate will give you that sound. A converter doing this is something I have never heard of. But anything can happen..

how old is it? have you been to the track with it? how many miles on it.
my other converter made that sound i changed it and it quit. the lock up clutch material was messed up.

Well, it's not the motor. I unbolted the converter, slid it back, and the noise went away.

Sounds like something in the lock-up part of it has gone bad. Piston, plate, something isn't right?

What sort of lock-up issues did you have?

Car wouldn't lock on it's own. It would lock if I used the lockup switch, but still the RPM was higher than I would expect.

Sounds like the lock-up solenoid went bad and possibly damaged the converter. The solenoid can stick and the converter will not un-lock while decelerating. You'll notice it when coming to a complete stop and it feels like the cars is jumping........alot like a stick shift car slowing down without clutching it.

I have a clunking noise in my junk too.
My converter works perfectly though.
I am going to check my converter bolts again and then
maybe consider replacing the flexplate next.
