clutches glazed?

I just got word back on my Art Carr 19930 9" N/L torque converter and it turns out it was ok. They are tightening it up a bit, but everything inside checked out A-OK.

Now i'm really wondering whats going on.

Heres the symtoms/problems.

From my directscan logs the car is turning 4900 rpm to turn 75mph and 5200 to turn 90mph (trapped 92mph in the 1/8, 5375rpm). I am running a 25.7" tire (nitto 275/50/15) and 3.42 gears.

According to a few calculations I am seeing 21% slippage at 90mph, 30% at 75mph.

Others i've talked to with AC 9" N/L are seeing 10% slippage with the same calculations.

Since the converter checked i'm trying to figure out what it could be. One suggestion that came up is that the clutches in the trans can become glazed (before they go out completly) which if thats the case they could be slipping as I apply more power (which points to my original problem where i'd turn up the boost but run the same MPH)

any suggestions?

I have a spare trans sitting in the garage, but it only had a "street rebuild" so I don't know it it will hold up to many passes....
 
Just my opinion......

Nope..... I still say converter......... Converter quite possibly is absolutly perfect... so what,,,, still might be too loose.... two seperate entities. The converter is fine.. correct , but you are driving the combo. Is it too loose? Well, your data sure as hell seems to be showing that. So, with that in mind , persue from there. If clutches were glazed, it may effect the shift quality and "eventually" failure but to be giving up in the way your are theorizing, I would tend to say, no. When they go , you will know.

I had them tighten it up a bit, but they said it was already pretty tight, somthing about a 40deg pitch or somthing. He said they can't go much tighter than what their going to do. Unfortunatly i'm on a very limited budget so I am stuck using this converter. My main question is should I just put it back in with the same trans I was using (85 Trans with a street/strip build up) or the spare trans that I have (86 BRF with street build up)? The 86 one shifted fine when it was pulled, but it was behind a stock motor.

The 85 trans shifts real short, 1-2 in about the width of a cross walk under light accel. WOT its like 25mph, 2-3 is like 45-50mph and the shifts are a bit soft.
 
its a Non-lockup converter. I have the transgo n/l kit in the 85 trans.
