what are the best clutches for the buck?

i guess when i ran my trans and it sprung a leak it burnt most of the clutches.. so, time to start shopping around...

when this trans was working, i can honestly say i was very disappointed with the shifting.. it was all soft, something that i would expect from a caddy. what can i do to get those hard shifts?

the guy who built my el camino tranny (man, that thing shifted nice, pretty much no matter how much gas i was in it, it would bark the tires between the 1-2 shift -burt- ). he said use more clutches in the packs, is that a good idea or bad?

thanks

-Neil

Vendor Defendor,

I personally like a Borg Warner clutch for stock to mild hi-performance use.

BE SURE to presoak ANY clutch you decide on for at least 15 minutes, the longer the better.

I would recommend you get a shift kit from one of the vendors here.
I can't personally recommend a kit for the 200-R4 yet as I haven't used any.

HI I'd like to give this posting a boost and hope we can get more discussion.

Chris (CK) on another message board you indicated to stay away from "raybestos blues" in a 2004R. In that same posting someone mentioned "heavy duty" borg warner. and of cousre the Alto Reds always get discussed.

so what clutch recommendations do the experts have for a 600+ HP motor running on the street with the 2004R?

thanks.

here I go responding to my own post..

but my search hadn't taken me as far as the

"raybestos blue plate clutches are losers" thread when I originally replied to this posting.

So if anyone thinks I purposedly tried or trying to get a big debate going - I'm NOT!

if the gurus have nothing new from previous postings so be it. Just trying to make the right decision for my rebuild:) :)

thanks again

If not an ultra performance build use red clutches. think a lot of people are still out of town for the holidays.:D

On a street strip build,
the stock OEM style clutches will work fine in the low/reverse, forward, and overrun packs.

The weak clutches on the 200-4R are the direct and 4th.
I would install reds in these locations and add a friction to the 4th pack.

I used reds throughout on my build because I get them in a complete kit.

this was an old post.if you dig deep you will find many buried bones on this including many interesting "bones"in one particular thread that comes to mind.ahh philadelphia,i have a history in the city of brotherly love.used to run a lee myles on ogontz avenue and washington lane and another one on broad and louden years back.the trip gets boring after a while 100 miles each way.had a temporary crash pad in northeast philadelphia for 6 months .ginos for cheestakes ,61st and the boneyards for illegal drag racing........i did enjoy myself .had a 10 second street driven 87 ssmonte carlo back then, spanked many and got spanked by a red turbocharged mustang.

well I was a Decatur Road junkie. However I was either a watcher or navigator - there weren't many runs for a '63 Stude Lark, '62 Buick SkyLark or even the '68 Skylark - all with stock 6 cylinders. Had to ride in my buddies' Chevelles, Caprices, and occasional Mopar or AMC to go fast. I guess that's why I can't get enough of power today. Nearly fifty and really enjoy riding around with big ass tires on the "jacked-up" back-end, open loud exhaust, flashy wheels, full-size (used to be mid-size) body, kick-butt cars. Decatur, Broad Street and Atco hold a lot of memories.

but Chris, I need your recommendation here.

Clutches - my man. The motor is built and the tranny is waiting. what are the best parts so I can re-enact my Decatur days?? ;)

thanks.
