I'm about to send my stock headers and crossover off to be thermal coated. Do you suppose that a coating will hold enough heat in the headers to eliminate the heat shields on the headers?

Yes, dump the heat shields. I have my headers coated with JetHot's 2000° flat blue and the downpipe in 1300° silver. Be careful using standard 1300° coating on the headers, as the stuff could possibly flake off and go through your turbo! My EGT's often hit 1550°.

I still think for peace of mind I would only coat the outside of the headers. As mentioned if the coating starts flaking that could be bad news.

I disagree. I've coated a bunch of stuff inside and out without problems. I used NHTC, New England High Temp coatings in Concord NH.

Hey Russ, Is the standard 1300* stuff working well on the downpipe?? No discoloration??
Thanks.

I don't coat the DP, I polish it. Stainless rocks. If you do coat it though, it will be fine.

Yes, coating is holding up just fine so far. Underhood temps are way down, too.

i've had 1300 coating on my downpipe for 4 years, i just had a small pinhole rust thru on the little wastegate tube. i have hooker headers with 1300 coating and it held up well. my new atr headers just got back from HPC i had them done in 1300. the guy at HPC said that all the turbo mustang stuff they do is done in 1300. the price for 2000 coating on the atrs was 550 bucks! the 1300 was 200 bucks.

Just as the name implies. Thermal Barrier Coating is a thermal barrier, helps keep underhood temps down and retains the heat in the headers for better turbo spooling.
