Coil Pack: Dying or Dead?

Last night I cranked the car over with the plug wires off of the coil pack (priming oil system and testing fuel system)... and according to a buddy ~4 of 6 terminals were arcing to the center of its corresponding coil.

Does this mean that I have a worn out unit... or am I supposed to avoid cranking her over with the plug wires off?

I have a spare coil pack so I should be okay to replace it as a test.

Thanks,

It damages the coil/module to crank the engine without the plug wires on the plug or grounded. If it was not bad before, it may be now.

What is your definition of "grounded"?

I knew I shouldn't have let my buddy to convince me to pull the wires rather than undo the harness to the pack. Crap.
