Column Shift, Gear indicator adjustment

I've had my steering column and gauge cluster out, so I had that little string disconnected which clips on the column and moves the gear indicator. Now that I'm putting things back together I can't remember where exactly to position the clip on the end of the string so that the gear indicator displays properly.

Can anyone point me to the right spot?

On my other GM column shift cars of this era,the cable (string) does not come off of the clip.

The clip pushes onto the steering column housing. When the housing moves with the shifter handle,the cable gets pulled to indicate what gear.
